good cam for stock car
I am going to do a cam this winter along with a list of other things. The car is stock and this winter I am going to do 1.6RR's, springs, clutch, cam, longtubes, ORY and a tune. Now the car is going to stay like this for the next 5-6 years until i get out of pharmacy school. I want a cam that will make good power, be streetable and not sacrifice that much gas mileage.
I was thinking about just getting the hotcam kit since it came with everything, does anyone else have any suggestions??? any info would be appreciated.
Also, i will most likely replace the timing chain, since i have a electric WP what kind of chain can i use???

Re: good cam for stock car
I don't have a cam so I can't give any personal experience or advice but from what I've gathered you can't go wrong with the hotcam kit or the cc305. Both make around the same power(with a little more potential from the cc305) but they are very mild, hence very streetable. Apparently you can even run the hotcam with the stock tune if you can't get one asap. Since you aren't looking for anything too wild I'd stick to either of those. If you go with the hotcam kit get some better springs. I'm sure others will chime in with more knowledge. Goodluck!

<<still running on stock tuning w/ Hotcam. Off-idle response is OK, but could be better which tuning would probably take care of. Without tuning, I have seen on the dyno that the Hotcam makes identical power to the stock cam up until ~5,000 rpm.

Re: good cam for stock car
I've used the hotcam before, and it's a nice cam and kit is very well priced. The spring were made for the regular LT4 cam which has lower lift than the hotcam with 1.6. Coil bend for these psrings if I recall correctly is at 0.55 so that leaves very little safety margin, not a big deal if you're not always hard on it.
For the timing set, go with cloyes double roller with the electric water pump.

Re: good cam for stock car
well i was hoping that I could just buy the hotcam kit and call it good. but if i cant even use the springs that come with it then whats the point.
Why would GM put spring in the hotcam kit that arent strong enough for the cam???
What would be a better setup for a cam kit?? I was looking for somewhere around 350 RWHP with all the mods I am going to do.

Re: good cam for stock car
People keep bashing the LT4 springs, because they don't have a ton of spring pressure, but the Hotcam has lazy lobes, and the springs have proven to work great. You just can't rev it to the moon, or you can hit valve float. If I remember correctly, above 6200-6400 rpm's or so, valve float may be an issue.
Have any of you guys bashing the LT4 springs ever seen them causing problems? Please post examples if you have.

Re: good cam for stock car
I just did the hotcam kit with a Cloyes double roller and EWP and am quite happy with the performance, its still a very streetable car and I am getting about 22-23mpg mixed hwy and city when I stay out of the fun zone on the tach.

I am going to different and say the GM 846: 222/230 .509/.528 I'd say its the largest Mid size cam I would go for what your looking for. Anything bigger sounds like it would be over kill.
Although the Hotcam will get you close to the same for less $
