Gonna be changing spark plugs / wires

I am gonna be changing my spark plugs and wires. I hopefully want to do this myself after I do a little research. Does the brand or type of spark plug matter? There is a good deal on bosch platinum plugs (1.09 each). I was wondering if maybe i should buy them. I would need 8, correct? I am also wondering if brand or type of wire matters?

BTW, does anyone know a good guide on doing this for the lt1?

Re: Gonna be changing spark plugs / wires

YUCK dont mess with bosch, they suck for anything but imports and german cars.... i know people use em, and they work, but honestly, go with TR55s from NGK, or AC Delco rapid fires..... the platinums in some AC Delco i have heard work good, but im a copper guy i like big electrodes with the ability to re gap my plugs. i think the TR55s are about 4 bucks a pop... but why put cheap **** in the car thats taking you where you need to go..... and fast as hell..... go with the NGK... JMHO, oh, and get Delco wires, or something equivilant, because most wiresets are mis-sized and they wont clear the tight spaces in the wire routing, or you will have dangerously long wires.... try to keep the wires stock, or get some custom "cut to fit" wires.... Taylor makes some good ones i have heard, just dont use ACCEL, they arent true high performance if you ask me, MSD or Delco....

Any other brands that are good, i am not sure my local murray's or autozone carries those plugs, they might carry the wires.

Taylor wires are good, 8mm. Stock is 7mm. It's a bit of a pain to get them into the stock 7mm holders but do able. As for plugs i gotta agree with ZeeDub, either get some NGK or some good platinum plugs.

I run 8mm Taylor wires and NGK plugs.

Stock gap is .050. No need for anything different, IMO.

NGK TR55. and taylor wires. Dont be frustated the first time you change them because it is a pain in the butt. But after that its okay. Do your research there are a lot of detailed pages to be found

While doing the spark plugs, is there any need to replace the spark distributer? I am not noticing any skipping or anything like that. I just wanted to change my spark plugs because i had over 100,000 miles.

I wouldn't touch the opti until it starts giving you problems. Check the waterpump and make sure it's not leaking on the opti though.

Re: Gonna be changing spark plugs / wires

honestly, i would stay away from platinum altogether, but thats just me, i dont like the tiny electrodes on the platinum plug... i like knowing i have a nice large sufrace for my plugs to arc... JMHO as for using 8mm over 7mm? thats going to change the resistance, but not by too much, they are better used with high capacity ignition systems, like MSD and Mallory.. i would stick with factory thickness, 7mm... but i also think that the taylor wires are a good set to have in this circumstance, due to faulty manufacturing from most companies, so you can make your OWN cut for the wires, that is, if you want to save money.... or you could spend short of $100 on a set of delcos but i have a good friend that works for a well respected auto parts store in the area, and he has a 94 Z28 and beefed his up with all kinds of goodies, and he helped me pick out a decent wireset close to factory lengths, we had to go thru each wire individually side by side with the delco set.... but it was worth it i spent half of what i would on delco and they are 7mm factory cut wires NGK plugs, and delco or equivilant wires....

special note: if you have headers, or are planning to get some, i guess i would have to say go with the taylors, their heat rating surpasses stock... and they will hold up better against the tubes... JMHO

Re: Gonna be changing spark plugs / wires

The idiots at Auto Zone told me the exact same thing, they had something like 3 Delcos and a set of the Bosch. Don't use the Bosch, with as much trouble as it takes to change the plugs you will just be twice as pissed if you have to do it twice. Go with OE or the NGKs, it will save you headachs down the road.

Hmm,k seems you beat me to the post.

Re: Gonna be changing spark plugs / wires

im actually planning on doing the same thing as you in the next week or so. all of the delco wiring and plugs i found oreily's had for a good deal. they're are also giving me like 20% discount from a racing team so im getting the full set of wiring for about $50-60 range. i just hope this wont be a B**** to do cuz it is my first to do it. good luck for you though.
