ive heard its a bad idea, but its the only way i can do it.
any opinions would be great.

Re: going to drop pan...need some input.
You can support the motor from the trans and hub. The hoist would in fact be the best option though. I jacked the motor up from the crank hub but because I was in the same situation but use a hoist if possible.
Re: going to drop pan...need some input.
i understand the hoist is better option, but i dont have one. And btw the crankshaft is forged and stronger than that steel one. But this is the only thing i can do.
So just jack it up from the hub and possibly from the tranny useing a 2x4 for the tranny pan?

I don't know what the auto tranny looks like (or even if you have one) but the t56 is pretty beefy on the bottom. I use that when I installed my headers and had to lower the kmember to get them in.

you can lift it using the tranny as a lift point. I don't think I would use the hub and risk bending it. It is a pita but better than pulling the whole engine any day

so just put a 2x4 under the jack, and jack up the tranny, but undo the tranny mount 1st right?

Definately rent a hoist. I pulled my pan twice last week, with the hoist it's only a two hour job start to finish. I don't think you risk bending the crank, but you certainly put an undo strain on the bearings. I wouldn't feel very safe with the whole weight of the engine resting on the hub, i'd be worrying about it falling off. I'm with everyone else here, go spend the $30 and rent an engine hoist from the local tool rental place, or find a friend with one.
