Going from 2.73 to 3.73

I really want to change my gears before i go to college. Im getting a new engine soon and figured i might as well put in gears. The college im attending is around 70 miles from my hometown, and even though im going to live over there i plan on driving back alot. Do you guys think its a good idea to change to this gears?

Also with my 2.73 at WOT it shift at about 45mph, will this change?

With the A4.... 3.42 gears.. RPMs wont be high in forth & better gas mileage... Thats why I use them.... JMO

yes your shiftpoints will change, that's kinda the whole idea of the gears. Do a search on "3.73" and I'm sure you'll find a WHOLE bunch of info. There's always been so much debate over "2.73 vs 3.42 vs 3.73". btw....I'm probably going with 3.42's.

ive had all 3 lol and i like the grunt of the 3.73's but for all around the 3.42's will be your best choice. i have those and a vig 2800 and have driven all over the us with no problems and the rpm's arent really that high as with the 3.73's. hope this helps

Re: Going from 2.73 to 3.73

I have the 3.73's and they are awesome for driving around town, alot of low end grunt and it really wakes up the car, but when you get on the freeway it starts to suck because you'll be doing 70@~2500 RPM's in 4th. However, if I could do it again, I would still choose 3.73's.

3.73s are gonna kill u on mileage from those 2.73s. I went from 3.23s to 3.73s and i got huge gains. it launched harder, all around better car. gas mileage went down. a little more strain on the engine at highway speeds, but still gets 21mpg with quite a few mods. I have taken it on 1000mile trips each way with no problems. If u do a lot of highway, with these gas prices prolly not the greatest idea. you will see your biggest gain with 3.73s (besides 4.10). You will see decent off 3.42, i went with 3.73 because 3.42 would have been a waste for me. good luck with your decision. -Michael

You shouldn't have to adjust the shift points because the powerband is still the same so the car will still shift at the appropriate RPM's.

WRONG, You will have to change the shift points. The computer shifts the trans by MPH, not rpm. Been there and done it. Went from a 2.73 to a 3.73. Had to change the speedo settings and the shift points.
