the gm 847 cam

well I am looking at doing a cam swap pretty soon and was thinking about which one to get. I was leaning towards the hotcam kit for the first cam in the car but I have seen and heard people talking about the gm 847 cam and was wondering if I would see much more power out of that than with the hotcam. The description I saw with the 847 is that it was not for use on computer controlled vehicles, I know that cant be right because I have seen a bunch of people on here with them. What kinds of times have people been putting down with the 847 and boltons?

do a search there is a lot of info on this cam. By far a big step up from the hot cam

My set-up is completely different than what youre aiming for but the 847 in a 383 is really nice . I will get to the track this next month but it has the sotps meter pegged way past the previous cam I had in the same set-up (XE 230/236)

Just installed this cam with the same tuning I had from the other cam (221/230 Crower) and it is still running rich. Gonna tune it this weekend through PCM4less... This cam is great and runs fine with the computer programming, even vacuum for the brakes to work fine. No problems at all and someone on this board ran an 11.98 on stock unported heads with this cam (M6 & slicks launching at 6k lol). Best of luck to ya!!

You can run any type of camshaft in a computer controlled engine. Details of my setup with the GM847 cam are in my sig.
405rwhp with mildly ported stock heads and highest trap speed of 117.72mph.

yeah I just thought it was weird about the description I read at sdpc2000.com about the 847 cam saying not for use with computer controlled vehicles, but obviously it is because there are a bunch of people on here using it. Th one guy atljar has one and he runs like 11.98 on stock heads I think, but the lift specs on his were a little bit different than the ones that I have seen. Dont quote me on this but I think his was like 575 intake 595 exhaust or something like that, and the gm 847 that I saw said like 540 intake 558 exhaust I think. Im sure I am off with those numbers but what are the correct numbers for the 847.

.539/.558 lift with 1.5 rockers

.575/.595 lift with 1.6 rockers

Considering what stock LT1 heads flow, all you need is 1.5 rockers

The 847 is way different than the LT4 Hot cam. I would
think you should rethink your whole arrangement if
picking the 847 over the hot cam. It's like skipping two
steps.

i am thinking about moving up to the 847 because the cc306 i just installed is rather mild.

You must have big cubes, heads or high tolerances for whats drivable if the CC306 is too mild for you, the GM847 won't be that big of a step-up. The Crane 109651 is the next step up from the crane 109841 (GM847). If it was sold by GM it would be the GM848

240/244 @ .050 .595/.595 lift 110 ls

My friend runs that cam in his daily driver 97 Z28 M6. His car runs fine, once its tuned it has real good street manners and idles fine. No more agresive than a CC306 car. I could see driving a cam like that every day, he does with out any complaints. His car is also stock headed, with the exception of valve springs and rockers. Hes moving up to some AFRs shortly for it. The car runs great though.

Maybe thats because you're running 14.2 with that cam... You obviously need to get your car running... right. The only difference between the 306 and 847 on intake is 2 degrees by the Crane cam and exhaust is 2 degrees higher on the Comp cam.

okay so if I went with the 847 I could keep the stock rockers and get .539/.558 lift with 1.5 rockers. But if I put 1.6 rockers on it would be too much? This sounds like a good cam to get since it will provide enough lift to be pretty stout then when I get some good heads I could up the rockers to 1.6 and be good to go? cool
