gm 847 in a 383

hi im putting together a 383 lt1 with ported and big valved factory castings. i called comp cams for a camshaft recomendation about a year ago. they told me to get the xfi 468 with 918 beehive springs, which i bought. i have since heard alot of bad about this cam. i was considering swapping to an 847, even thought i never installed the 468. anyone like this cam in there 383? the bottom end is forged with 4 bolt mains & i will be using 150 of nitrous & a 3500 convertor. i was planning to shift around 6500. i didnt want to pay for a custom grind & was hoping to use stock length pushrods since i have already bought them also. thanks.

If you have milled the heads, decked the block and switched to a thinner head gasket, you can pretty much forget about using stock length push rods. You should always measure for the correct geometry. If you don't at best you give up horsepower and at worst you'll chew up valvetrain. Your choice.

You have to pay to play. You will be MUCH happier with just spending the money for a custom grind nitrous/blower cam than just putting in an off-the-shelf cam. I'm sure you've spent several thousand dollars between the heads and block, so what's an extra $300 for a camshaft that will be matched to your heads and proper length $60 pushrods that, if AREN'T measured and checked, will do what 94zgreenmachine stated.

Spend the money. Reap the benefits.

good old three: Fast, reliable, cheap. You pick two.

Get a custom cam and get the proper pushrods. The valvetrain isnt a thing you do on a budget.

I really like the two replies before mine, i would re-read them, they make a lot of sense.

you dont have to be "cheap" to make a budget minded decision. since you already have that cam i would use, at least you will know for sure if its not a good cam. I think where it gets bad attention is from people wanting to use a cam this size in a stock shortblock/headed motor. Yours is neither of those. get some good pushrods and you should be fine.

Delsoto has the 847 and made 440rwhp and 400rwtq. It's on his 355.

true, but his result is pretty uncommom. He clearly knows a thing or two about building a motor.

okay, so are my 918 beehive springs sufficient? and lets bring on the opinions and/or suggestions, i want to go 10's on a 150 shot & would like to see mid to high 11's n/a. i'll drive the car to work about once or twice a week and other than that bracket racing every friday night. now i kinda wish i'd have gone with a solid roller (would that have been a much better choice?) but i already have some caddy lifters and most of the valve train stuff. the heads have 58cc chambers & have been milled .010, the block decked .015 with some mahle flat tops with 2 valve reliefs, & i cant remember off hand but i think the head gaskets are .043, so it should have good compression. i dont want to cut any corners on this motor. what should i do or who should i talk to about a custom cam?

I would look into a good set of dual springs for your needs.

I second that. I highly doubt the 918 will be enough spring.

I run the 847 cam and love it. run the cc-8893 springs, there is a set for sale on this board right now. I made 400 rwhp and 385 torque through a 9", I had a bad opti that was acting up when I was on the dyno and tech @ Speed Inc thought there was another 20 left in her. I run the MSD opti and knock on wood been trouble free!

Delsoto knows what he is doing for sure.... but that doesn't change that making sure your combo is right will make less power.

All im am trying to say is by copying his setup your not going to end up with his result. He had a thing or two to do with it being 440rwhp.

use that 468. People badmouth it because its "new" and not very proven yet. People use the 466 and make 360/370 at the wheels, and its a LOT smaller than the 468

I'm using the 847 in my 383, never had it on the Dyno but it went 11.30s @ 121 mph in a leathered up WS 6..lol

But seriously, try the cam you have.

I use the K-motion K-800 Springs with my 847.
