GLOWING exhaust manifolds

OK, my buddy just bought a 97 Z28 with the LT1. the car only has like 36 k miles on it and its the defintion of mint. He has had it for about 2 months now using it as a daily driver. With no warning his car just took a dump, BOTH the exhuast manifolds awere glowing red, and he cant get over 20 mph with the pedal all the way to the floor. Hes pissed and the car was never beaten on. We checked the voltage at all the injectors and it checked out all good. Any ideas. I dont know LT1s but maybe the fp is messed up or a sensor that is causing the computer to dump extra fuel into the cylanders. No fuses are blown and the exhaust was never touched so nothing i could think of, Any ideas please. He has to get to school tomorrow, thanks

well.....sounds like fuel to me. Replace the filter and it should help.

BTW: glowing manifolds mean lean not rich....

Sounds like a lean condition with clogged cats.

maayybe, but Cats don't usually go, "well I'm gonna clog today." They will slowly kill performance.

Very true, but, catalytic monoliths have been known to break loose and stop up exhaust flow. He could verify that by getting under the car and tapping on the converter itself to see if there is any rattling. I would suspect a lean condition caused by a bad fuel pump or injector issue.

36000 miles is kinda soon for a cat to clog. Filter is cheap and easy as well as routine maintenance that should be done anyhow.

It sounds like you are running lean, as the others stated the O2 sensors are probably going south and yor CATS are breaking up and causing the exhaust to get clogged. Good Luck

A 97 with only 36k has been sitting a lot. It probably had Schitt settled in the gas tank... which is now clogging the filter. I'd change that first. Also run some cleaner through.
