Getting stock heads ported, I need advice

I found a local guy/shop that's very popular with the ford guys and is supposed to do a GREAT job for litlte money. However...

He's told me that he's looked at the intake side and doesn't really see much room for improvement except for matching the intake (which is way off). It seems pretty common to see a decent port job getting at least 240-250 cfm (260s-270s on a good job) for lt1 heads - surely this can't be completely from matching the intake!? (They're around 215 stock - right?)

My question, Do you guys know what areas on the intake side can be improved on? He really does seem to know what he's doing, he's just not familiar with LT1 heads. I'm thinking if I can point this guy in the right direction I'll learn some and end up with better heads.

Thanks!

PS - Maybe if there are pics of good ported heads somewhere too?

You really want somebody learning on your heads? Send them to somebody who has proven results with LT1 heads.

Ditto. You get what you pay for too.

Agreed, your guy may be a great porter with those Ford heads I don't think any of us are arguing that, but sounds as if you should take your LT1 elsewhere.

If you've been around this forum since 1999 and haven't read some of the thousands of posts about Lloyd Elliott (http://www.eportworks.com), you need to hang out more on LT1 Engine Tech and Advanced Tech.

If you are trying to "low buck" your head porting, or do it yourself, as you have previously indicated, you'll probably be disappointed.

To amplify on what SS MPSTR said:

"You don't always get what you pay for but you seldom get something worthwhile that you DON'T pay for."

It sounds like this guy doesn't know what he is doing if he thinkings that Gasket matching is all your heads need. If you want someone local go to www.ksfba.org. There is a guy thats here in KS that is suppose to be pretty good. I personally would just box up the heads and send them to AI.

That's what I was afraid of, I probably needed to hear that. I'm gathering up the courage to call him now and call the whole thing off...

I've already emailed Lloyd to see what he can do for me for a forced induction setup. He's the master of low cost ballsy NA setups, we'll see what he can do for me I guess?

Thanks for slapping me around guys...

If you have the money I would recommend a set of AFR heads, before you go sinking alot of money into a stock casting, especially on a blower/turbo car. Stock LT1 castings are okay ported, but even stock the castings are paper thin, and they don't have much of a deck surface. AFR heads are real heavy compared to stock castings, but they have alot of aluminum to work with and they have thick (3/4") deck surfaces for great gasket retention in forced induction applications. Even stock the exhaust ports blow away most ported LT1 castings. Just something to think about

I did look into them... jegs gets like $1825 for them! Ouch... Then I still have to buy the whole valvetrain!?

I'm not *THAT* serious about this thing, it's just a hobby... I'm going to be running mild boost anyway.

Well $1825 is most likely complete with valves and springs, ready to bolt on
