Getting ready to swap engines.. looking for some advice
Getting ready to swap engines.. looking for some advice
Well I am pretty sure that I blew my headgaskets. Since I have no money and this is my daily driver my only option is to use the motor from my wifes wrecked 95 Z28.
I will be doing the swap at a local shop, so I will have a lift. From reading on here I have decided to pull it out the bottom.
My checklist of things to get so far are:
Get flywheel turned
New clutch
New exhaust manifold gaskets
New plugs & wire
Use radiator and waterpump from wifes car if possible
My real concerns are the fact that her car is a auto and mine is a 6-speed. They are identicle other than that. My radiator is shot in mine(small crack I was unaware of that caused my car to overheat) and I am not sure if the radiator from an auto car will work.
So basically will her radiator work? And any other things that I need to deal with since the motor was in an auto car?
Thanks,
David

Re: Getting ready to swap engines.. looking for some advice
i'm 99% sure her radiator will work. I just went and bought a new radiator for my 6 speed Z and they only offer one and it fits both autos and manuals, its just if you have a manual you don't need to hook up the tranny cooler lines.
Re: Getting ready to swap engines.. looking for some advice
Sweet.. Thats what I was hoping for. I really don't want to put another high mileage motor in. But with limited funds its all I can do for now.
Hopefully I will be able to rebuild my motor within the next 6 months or so.

David

Re: Getting ready to swap engines.. looking for some advice
i know you said you were short on cash but new radiators at autozone are only $175. I've heard people saying you can get new tanks put on your old one for $75 a side also, so you can just get the bad side fixed. Just some suggestions, as sh1tty as these plastic radiators are your wifes probably got cracked in the wreck.
Re: Getting ready to swap engines.. looking for some advice
Yeah, you may be right. I am not super broke so I will be able to swing a new radiator. Probably for the best too. The reason as far as my buddy and I can figure out, it over heated because of a small crack in the radiator. The thermostat didn't have water touching it and didn't open.
I am hoping the original block is rebuildable so I can put something together more suited to the supercharger.
Thanks again for all input,
David

Re: Getting ready to swap engines.. looking for some advice
Ok, new question.. Trying to get everything figured out before putting the wifes motor in.. Now after some reading on here, it looks like I need to get the flywheel from my car balanced to her motor's flexplate?? Hers was an A4 and mine is a M6. If I need to do that, would I just take it to like napa auto parts and have them balance it when they resurface it? Any rough estimates on how much that usually costs?
Thanks,
David

Advice on the flywheel. Don't take it to get it turned, local shops only have basic flywheel grinding wheels. Buy a reman from a parts store, those come from manufacturers that have CNC equip and they install new ring gears. I got one for my 94 LT1 from AutoZone through Standard Flywheels. It cost $40. You have to turn in your old core, also you won't risk wasting time if the local guy tells you yours can't be turned, etc.

LT1's are externally balanced, so you must use the original or get the new one balance matched to the old one, unless you like full body massages while your driving. By the way, if you just blew a head gasket, why are you pulling the whole motor? Did you not catch it soon enough and do more damage then maybe a warped head? Just curious.

To get it balance matched to the original motor do I just bring the flywheel from mine(or a new one) and the flexplate from my wifes motor? I didn't even think about the fact that mine was a M6 and hers was an A4..
And the reason I am using my wifes motor, is that mine was above redline for probably 10 mins or so before I even noticed the temp gauge. By the time I saw the temp and pulled over it was pretty much running like a diesel motor. And also the motor from my wifes car has less mileage, no blow-by, and runs =].. I am planning on rebuilding my original as long as the block is fine.
Thanks,
David
