Getting Hot

Getting Hot

A few weeks ago my 1994 Z28 started to run hot, up to about 270 degrees. When I am driving in town from stoplight to stoplight it will stay hot. When I get out on the highway the temperature will return to normal. I suspected the thermostat was bad so I replaced it and that did not cure the problem. I had the local Chevrolet dealer check it out and they admitted it was running a little hot but they said everything in the cooling system checks out okay. They are suggesting that I might need a new radiator. My Camaro only has 70,000 miles on it and I wouldn't think the radiator should have reached the end of its life yet. It seems that prior to this overheating problem, when the cooling fans came on they were a lot louder than they are now. Although the fans are working they don't sound like they are moving as much air as before. Is it possible that one or both of the fan motors are operating but not as fast as they should be? Do I go ahead and replace the radiator and hope for the best? Has anyone experienced problems similar to this?

Before you buy a new radiator,I would try flushing the old one out real good.Also power wash it or blow it with compressed air.As for the fans I believe low speed comes on at 225*,high speed at 245*.Make sure you get all the air out of it when refilling after flushing.Hope this helps.

Sounds like airflow if the highway driving is ok. Honestly I thought these cars just run hot around town all the time, last summer I got sick of the heat buildup and put in a 160 degree thermostat and HPP program for earlier fan activation and now my 94 runs around 170-180 all the time (not so great for winter). Of course the 93 runs colder than normal also, but that's because the front end is somewhat modifed due to a rough landing...

So there is a high speed and a low speed. If my fan motors never switch to high speed than what is likely to be the problem? I pulled all of the relays out and they check out just fine.
