Is this gauge swap possible?
I have a 96 Formula with an analog odometer. I have been toying with the thought of upgrading to a set of gauges with a digital odometer.
My understanding is that the gauges in the 97+ were digital, is this true?
If so, how difficult woult it be to get a set of newer gauges, program my mileage into the odometer and install it in the car.
Are the digital odometers controlled by the PCM or do they just do the convert the analog signal into a digital display right at the gauges?

Check out Dakota Digital for fully digital gauges... www.dakotadigital.com
I'm hoping to swap to stock gauges in the newer cars that have a digital odometer..

I think anything can be done !
I have switched a 97 LT1 T/A gauges with a 99 LS1 Camaro gauges and people said you cant , you just have to mod a little
You can probably get away with just buying a set of 97 gauges on e-bay , there is just one plug in the back of the gauges
Your mileage will read whatever the donor car had , the mileage is saved in the small digital read out and cannot be changed

you HAVE to be able to change it.. When the car was new, if the gauges failed and had to be replaed, the new ones had to be programmed with the mileage...
Wonder if shoebox can give any insight into this?

When I switched my gauges it was b/c i wanted the white new camaro style so i kept all of the " brains " and just switched the face and a couple of other things and i was set to go .
My mileage never changed , but for what you are wanting to do I have read ( probably on here ) that once the odo gets .1 mile on it you can never change the odo . I assume that you would have to get a new digital read out and have it programmed at the dealer

Ok, when i worked on jeeps, the cluster had to be sent out to get programmed. I now work on BMWs, and there is redundant storage with another module, so you don't have to send it out. I believe that you would need to take it to a dealership to send out the cluster for GM, but it would prob have to be a new cluster, not a donor. I would ask a dealer how to go about doing it, being tampering with the odometer is a federal nono. Besides, it looks a little bad if you sell it with no documentation and a different cluster. Shoebox i am sure is going to correct me on this. Good luck.
