gas smell question...

Well this is an ongoing off and on problem for me. 1st started few months ago. I got this strong gas smell thru my vents when i turned on the heat. I thought it was from "topping off" my tank, so i stopped doing that and it went away. every now and then I'd get a slight smell thru the vents and also it seems to have some odor near the front left (driver side). today again i got a slight gas thru the vents and i sniffed around under the hood till i shorted out my nose and it seems to be mostly on the driver side. now I did a search and i read that it could be a vavle for the EVAP system that on that driver side. how would i go about checking it?? or maybe it's a leaky fuel injector on the driver side?? what would that look like btw? I think it's all tied in with my bad gas mileage...like 11mpg. Im also have one of those locking gas caps, I will replace it with my stocker for now and see how much of a difference it will make. oh these things are soo tricky to fix, but all your suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I doubt its an injector.

Probably the return line.

Wrap some brown paper around the line connections and start the car.

When you smell the gas, check and see if you see gas on the paper.

The EVAP hose where it goes into the three hose bundle to go to the back of the car is a good suspect. There is a short piece of 1/4" rubber hose that connects there and it is prone to disintegration.
