Gas mileage

We've just had the threat of fuel protests (refinery/fuel depot blockades) over here due to the recent breach of the £1 per litre milestone. So being clever I thought I'd fill my tank to the brim and pump my tires up to 40psi each and absolutely baby the throttle so I could ride out any shortages. By baby I mean I did not exceed 2000 rpm and accelerated as slowly as possible.

The protests never took off like we'd hoped so I took the opportunity to fill up again to the brim so I could work out my mpg.

I got 18.7mpg!

My car has 40k on the clock and the only mods are in my sig, no engine light and the car sounds like its running as it should.

I think I should be getting better mpg than that should'nt I?

I have not maintained the car as such, although I had a garage give it a full service about 5000 miles ago.

Oh, and those figures were what I would consider highway miles.

I average about 20 - 23 mpg. That's even when I'm getting it through town.
