Gas gauge

Ok, so i know the gas gauge on these cars likes to act up, namely gas goes up when accelerating and down when breaking. Today i was driving and the gas went from a hair off the empty mark straight to the full mark. It then started moving between half, quarter, empty, and full. It seems to be registering right because i put in 5 gallons and now its reading half.

What could be causing this?

Thanks,
Stu

It's another problem area on the camaros. Sometimes when I'm driving like crazy on some back roads and take sharp turns going fast the thing that measures the gas in the tank flips on it's side or turns over my gague on my console will freak out and jump around like crazy, it will reach over and pretty much touch the temp gague. 1 hour or two later it's usually back to normanl. I've read that some people will hit the gas tank with a rubber malet to try and get it to flip back over. At least I think thats how that works. Someone correct me or add something?

also the gas tank is v-shaped making the last half tank of gas seem to go a lot faster than the first half did

Yea i knew about the whole v shape thing and the reason it moves, but i was curious as to why is jumps. BTW i just before it happened i was driving like a madman through really nasty curves. OMG billstiens and 275's all the way around makes for a fun driving experience.
