Question gapping my plugs

This might be a stupid question but I just bought some ngk plugs & gapper for my 93 z recently and when i went to gap my new plugs they all seem to be around .055 out of the box and since I need to get them to .050 I was wondering if I have to just carefully bend them or how to go about it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I usually just tap them lightly on a hard surface to close the gap up some.
