Fuel shootong out of headers, it it a leaking injector??
I just got the engine started after sitting for over a year. The engine won't idle for more than 5 secs and I found the driver side headers leaking lots of fuel. At start up it will give a big mist of fuel, then drip when it turns off. This is only on the driver side. So I felt the headers and found one of them to be cold compared to the others. I changed the plug on that cylinder but the same thing. Do you guys think it's a leaking injector or is it something else? I also didn't check my fuel pressure but I would think if fuel pressure is too high, both headers woudbe leaking fuel
thanks
thanks
I had this EXACT SAME PROBLEM when I tried start my car after the engine was built. I would start it, it would fire right up then die. Gas would then leak out where my Y-pipe meets the cat.
Its the injectors, the fuel dried on them and clogged them up, some of them are not opening and some are sticking open. Replace them and it will start right up. It cost like $20 an injector to have them professionally cleaned so I just bought some used ones off the board.

A stuck open injector is DEADLY.
If the piston is at a lower elevation in the cylinder, close to BDC, if the injector is stuck open, and slowly leaks into the cylinder, upon startup will result in a nice kaboom. I've seen rods twisted and broken because of this.

New injectors are around 100$ a piece give or take 15$ ... OUCH .... If time isnt an issue ... Do what i did, All 8 of my injectors were clogged completely solid( Engine sat since some schmuck totaled this thing way back in 1996 and it only was started about a week or two ago ) , the engine wouldnt even stutter, I unhooked the rails with the injectors in and cranked it and NOT A DROP , Varnished solid ...
So i got quality Carb Cleaner, the stuff that youll have one hell of a time finding now because it has all kinds of nasty chemicals in it that the government doesnt want us to own. The stuff I borrowoed from my dads boss is WICKED ****, he said it was 50$ a quart, but jsut a few drops in each injector ( With the O-Rings off of course ) for 2 days, and then drenched them in gasoline for an hour to get all the cleaner out, and i put em back in, started rite up and idles smoothe as hell , not a spec of problems, no hesitation , nothing.

I was also told that "Brakeen" Brake Cleaner will give similar results, it dissolves varnish very well, BUT I personally didnt try it because the stuff I got cleaned it up fine. Do it at your own expense, but i really dont think it could hurt it ( Inless you completely SOAKED them, Jsut fill a container up about a 1/3 of an inch deep, sit them in your cleaner, with the nossle end down , and then fill each of the tops of the injectors with the cleaner as well, and check on them several times day cause some will dissolve and stuff , refill the ops of them as nessicary ... Mine IDLES PERFECT after sitting for 7 years, with gas in it ...
