Fuel pump going out...signs?

What are any signs of the fuel pump going out? I noticed when I turn the key to "on" and the pump starts to prime it's sounding really shaky, studdery. I also noticed a shaky idle and alittle shake in acceleration. Every now and then a thud almost a backfire in a way when I hit the accelerator suddenly. Any suggestions? Thanks!

When the FP went out in my truck recently, it was sudden with no warning. I don't know if your symptoms relate to a moribund FP or not. But it does sound like a problem that needs to be addressed.

Granatelli=Holley=Walbro FP. I think Walbro makes FPs for many private label FPs vendors. The Racetronix vendor has a nice complete F-body kit that includes the Walbro 255.

When mine went out it was kinda hit and miss. Sometime when the car was under heavy load like racing or going up a hill for a while it would loss power then eventually it would die after a minute or two. I could usually wait for an hour or sometimes even 20 min and it would fire back up and run great. It progressively got worse till it finally caught it in the act and had a fuel pressure gauge handy. It dropped to 5 psi at idle

This pump system would be a better choice than a system not specific to the F-LT1 cars:

The reasons behind this are listed in the ad.

Unhappy

When mine went it was two main things. It started better after a second try of priming and cranking and it started fine with a full tank and had the first symptom after a half tank. But, thanks to racetronics LT-1 pump I have never had another problem.

You could also measure your fuel pressure at idle and WOT with a fuel pressure gauge.

I had similar symptoms, but they were mostly as I got below 1/2 tank of gas... eventually dropped the tank and got inside to find there was a small hole worn in the hose on the INSIDE of the tank??? When the fuel level dropped below it, I would start to get the hesitation, and the gurgling noises from the pump as it primed. Either way, I think you will be happy with a new pump, especially if you ever plan some bigger mods - you will need to replace the stock one anyhow.

Thanks for all the info guys! I am going to try to run most of the gas out of it today and hopefully I can start working on it by Monday if everything turns out ok. If my hose is worn where can I get a new one besides the dealer?

Oh yeah, is there a good write-up on doing this so I'll be kind of prepared? Thanks!

You can use the "through-the-hatch" method if you like.

Thanks! Thats the way I'll do it. How will I have to disconnect the lines?

You can reach them through the panel in the upper left corner. If you want, you can cut the panel larger to reach them. You'll see them when the panel is cut. I managed to do it with the dimensions shown on my page.

I also used the Racetronix GSS307 pump and harness kit. Nothing but great things to say.

So what exactly are the upsides to the racetronix kit over others?
