Fuel pump change w/o cutting body

I'm ready to swap out my fuel pump and I'm DEFINATLY not chopping up my body. I have no muffer to begin with which makes things easier. And I have suspended the rear w/ jack stands on my SFC so the axle swings down out of the way. It looks like a clean shot to get the tank off. However, I wanted to know... once I unbolt this thing what to watch out for. Will I be caught up on any wires lines... or is there pleanty of room to unhook these? Any other warnings???

Thanks!!!

Disconnect the fuel feed and return lines with the quick disconnects mounted on the body. Also disconnect the electrical feed. After you lower it part way, you'll need to disconnect a couple of lines (charcoal canister, pressure vent line). The hardest part is pivoting the tank just the right way to clear the fuel fill neck from the body. Removing the plastic housing in the fuel cap door helps.

Re: Fuel pump change w/o cutting body

I'm about ready to SCREAM. For the past 7 hours I have finegaled that tank around and nearly COMPLETELY disassembled the rear of my car,.... and it STILL won't come out.... Here is where I'm at...

1) cut rear exhaust off (jurk that installed new cat welded all my exhuast together.

2) removed all heat sheilding around tank

3) unbolted passenger side control arm

4) unbolted panhard bars

5) disconnected drive shaft

6) removed torque arm

7) unbolted shocks and removed springs

8) lowered axel down as far as it will go w/ sway bar still on (i can't for the life of me get that thing off

9) removed plastic gas cap dealie

10) disconnected as many of the lines to the tank as possible... there was still one going to the pump i couldn't get at... and one for that carbon canister in the fender that just happens to hitch a ride on the top of the tank for no reason other than to annoy you when removing the tank

11) grunted moaned jurked... tried every imaginable angle in the world and still can't get tank out FOR THE LIFE OF ME

ANY suggestions???? Or should I just put it back together and cut a whole??? To save my sanity.

Thanks for the help

The rear end has to be removed completely from under the car or slid way forward.
Turn the back of the tank down(side that is pointing to front of car) and have someone guide the fill spout out.

Re: Fuel pump change w/o cutting body

I just went through this. I got the rear of my car as high as I could on jackstands. I had to remove the rear sway bar and actually let the rear end sit on the ground to get enough wiggle room for the tank to come out. Note: the tank comes out a whole lot easier than it goes back in. It took three of us to get my tank back in, and we ended up bending the body where the filler comes through.

Make sure you disconnect the electrical lines going from the tank to the body, and all fuel lines. There is also a vent line that goes to the charcoal canister that is in the fender, no clamp on that one it just slides off.

My recommendation to make it easier- unbolt sway bar, remove brake hard line and parking brake cables going to rear end, take off the LCA's and remove the entire rear end. Trust me, you'll spend 20 more minutes doing this and save yourself an hour worth of cussing, screaming and wanting to give up.

You need a second guy watching the filler neck; I recall needing to rotate the tank towards the front by the right rear tire.

Man you guys just need to learn to cut the trap door. It sounds like you just end up wasting a lot of time and having to bend/cut stuff around the filler neck to get it out. You guys are just wasting your time.

Exactly, there is no way in hell i would want to drop the gas tank. But if you do be sure to clean it out...as that is the only benifit of dropping the tank.

Doesn't the '94 have a non-flexible neck, but 95 & later has flexible?

Re: Fuel pump change w/o cutting body

Well it looks like any way I'm looking at it I'll have to bend the crap out of... and bust things up to get the fuel pump out so I think I'll reassemble everything and cut the whole. I seriously think from the looks of things this car was LITERALLY built around the tank. It looks as though they fasened it to the body and then layed it down on the subframes... welled the subframe in kind of like a sandwitch with the fuel tank in the middle. I don't think they even designed this car with the provisions to remove/install the thank w/ the car assembled. Which is slightly retarted from a maintenance point of view. Are corvettes built in this fassion as well? My plans are to get my car running nicely and sell it. Then start looking for a vette.

Re: Fuel pump change w/o cutting body

You still have time to go back and lowercase that "DEFINATLY" in your original post

I did the access hole and glad of it... Only part I was worried about was the first hole I drilled... Had nightmares of zipping right through to the tank.... But after the first hole it was a breeze.

You seem to have done too much work only to give up and put it back together again... I'd try some more to get the tank out before I gave up at this point... But, if you end up doing the access hole, HERE'S a link how I did it.

Re: Fuel pump change w/o cutting body

Before you give up, drink a cold beer then remove the stabilizer bar so the axle will swing freely and the access panel in the driver side wheel well for the charcoal canister. This should give you more room for the tank to miss the panhard rod brace bracket and the coil spring pad on the axle. Have a buddy guide the tank filler neck while you pull on it and it should come out. I dropped my tank by myself and cussed the whole time but after its done you will be glad you did so you can flush out the tank.
