front, shocks or struts?

was talking with a friend of mine and he was saying they were struts while i've always read that 4th gens used shocks up front
and could someone explain the technical difference between the 2?

I'm not at all sure but I think I read that strut setups don't use an upper a arm

Yup. On a strut car the top of the strut is the upper suspension attachment/pivot point. A 4th gen has shocks with an SLA (short long arm) front suspension. 3rd gens use struts.

its called a modified strut. but it works just like a coilover shock. yes, true struts dont have an upper control arm. the strut uses a upper mount/bearing since it has to turn.

Aside from all the previous explanations, there is nothing in the GM parts books or factory manual that calls it a strut in any way, shape or form. Call it a shock and know you are correct.
