Front oil galley plug ??
Front oil galley plug ??
There are three plugs behind the cam gear two of which are suppose to have small timing chain oil holes; right?
What are the part no. for those?
They are suppose to have holes to oil the chain and water pump drive correct?
Thanks

Re: Front oil galley plug ??
Yes, the two side ones have a pin hole in them. Part number 10110897. List price is $6.36 for one.
From what I've read and discussed, it's questionable whether the holes do much of anything. You should be fine with plugs without the 1/4 mm hole. However, they are 37/64" plugs which isn't a very common size, so unless you're going to tap the holes for a threaded plug (that's what Victory Racing Engines did in my short block), then you may have to go with the OEM plugs anyway.
You probably just wanted a part number, not a dissertation!

I've read where the holes shouldn't be needed, but I've got problems with a new rebuild and I'm assuming not having those holes are the problem. The new engine just began to make noise up front from the cover area. We popped the crank sensor out and it appears dry. We had lubed the chain upon rebuild to check clearance and I'm thinking that has kept it quite for the first few minutes of run time.
I'm using a clloyes double roller on this build w/ a CSI pump and '96 cover.
Re: Front oil galley plug ??
To my understanding, those holes are for added oiling on the waterpump drive gear and is critical if you are running a stock water pump. But they shouldn't be an issue when running a true roller with a EWP. I dunno if thats the truth, Thats just the conclusion that I have come to from reading pages of info on this site on that subject. FWIW, I have the factory plugs in place, and run a true roller with EWP, so I don't anticipate any oiling problems up front
Re: Front oil galley plug ??
I have done them all three ways, using the GM plugs, using 37/64 plugs without holes and drilling and tapping them for NPT plugs. I have never seen any adverse effect in oiling the timing chain or anything else.
I will preface this by saying that 95% of the engines we do, customers are using CSR or Mezeire electric water pumps. However even with mechanical water pumps I have not seen issues.

Re: Front oil galley plug ??
it was to my understanding that the holes were to provide better lubrication to the timing chain but proved to be a wasted effort in street blocks especially with owner negligence, just a little bit of sludgy oil would clog up the hole and remove any benefit from the hole, as far as i know the blocks run fine without it

RE: Golen Engine Service Info Desk Inquiry
The problems that most people have been having with wiping out the water pump gear on the LT4 roller set is that they do not install the water pump drive gear that comes with the LT4 set and instead use the stock one that came with the LT 1 engine. The LT 4 roller set is made of very hard metal and you need to replace the WP drive gear with the one provided in the LT4 roller kit inorder for it to not wipe out. As for the oil hole you can run them or not it should not make a real big difference , and yes the timing chain is oiled from the sling from the oil pan.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks,
Chad
I asked about this a while back.Hope it helps.

Thanks guys for all the replies.
The best I could figure the noise is coming from is a few of the COMP R lifters. Yes, I knew about some of the failures with these crazy things. I've used these lifters in my very own setup with great success for the last two years, I beleive with a good adjustment these lifters will live.
Does not sound like a typicall loose lifter as we are using a jesel shaft mount setup. We'll soon find out; we're gonna replace them with some morels soon.
