Front Alignment, am I getting screwed by this shop
Front Alignment, am I getting screwed by this shop
When I was doing a oil pan gasket replacement, I dropped the kmember, but I also loosened a a couple bolts that attach the k member to the lower control arm. I know now in hindsight that that was the wrong thing to do. Now my alignment is all tore up and my steering was all over the place.
I went to a shop and they said my car would be ready the next day. I went in to pick it up and they said my car was still at the alignment shop. Already, I was feeling like something wasn't right. The manager wasn't there, but the next guy in line told me that supposedly, my control arm and maybe the k member was bent and that I must have hit a huge hole or bump. Now I'm like yeah f'n right
. For one, I have barely driven the car since putting the car back together. Two, my alignment has been perfectly fine up until when I dropped the k.
I told them that I want to see the bent parts before they change anything and that I believe there's no way it could be bent.
Is it possible that I may have bent something when I dropped the k member and loosened those lca bolts up?
I feel like the alignment shop is trying to get over on me, but the shop that I brought the car to seems cool.

Ummm stock KMember is one beefy piece of metal. Only way I could bend the damn thing was with a heat torch and I know because I had to pound it back to gain clearance for the AC compressor. No way that thing is "bent" from a bump. I hit the hell out of it with my hand held sledge hammer and it didn't budge until I applied some heat to it. If I were you, get your car out of there immediatley and find another shop.

Thats what 10 minutes, a sledge hammer, and a blow torch did to mine, i'd love to see how yours is "bent".

I used to do alignment most likely you forgot to tighten a bolt and and I had it a couple times where i would set it up perfect go out for a test drive hit a bump in the road and well back to square one. the worst to work with are chevy truck the shims would back out and give you hell.
Damn, that was quick! So fellas, basically that's how I feel about the situation. The k is indeed beefy, but I don't see where they get this idea that things are bent. The guy said it as though, "things are REALLY messed up (bent)". That's when I explained to him, "uuummm, I didn't hit anything, I just dropped my k member and loosened a couple of the wrong bolts".
Right now, I'm dealing with a middle-man which I should've found out before hand. When I asked to go to see the car myself, the guy told me that he will get the car tomorrow a.m. and look at it himself
I really think that maybe they were a.) out joyriding, b.) the shop didn't start work on my car, c.) they messed something else up, d.) they think I don't know my car and want to take my money, which I'll refuse their services before they do.
Worst case scenario, things are damaged. But like I said, I probably drove the car 20 miles since the steering got funky after the oil pan job without hitting anything.
Thanks for the replies, I needed to reassure myself that I'm not going crazy
