Free mods hurt gas mileage?

I was wondering if removing the air pump and egr system would hurt gas mileage because after all, the egr does recirculate unburned gas which can be good for mileage. Well, anything else i should know?

actually, the EGR sys. recirculate burned gas(exhaust) into the intake to lower combustion chamber temps(to lower NOX)

I don't think you will lose mileage

You know what hurts the gas mileage of 99% of F-body owners? Their right foot... I wouldn't sweat gas mileage in regards to AIR/EGR mods.

Since I drive my F-body about 500 miles a year, I really could care less what my gas mileage is. If you're worried about gas mileage, buy a Hyundai.

Re: Free mods hurt gas mileage?

Well I got a camaro as my daily driver. Its my first car and it is the only thing my parents liked (I am thankful for that in many ways but gas is killin me), I was conscious about gas mileage and wanted a celica back in the day but my parents hated it (25+mpg for a sort of sporty car). I love my car I just dont want to do anything to hurt its already bad 14 or less mpg (I got all new liquids, filters, and spark plugs, and tires are filled to the max).

Re: Free mods hurt gas mileage?

with 14 or less mpg on a stock car i'd say you were in stop and go traffic all the time, you have a lead foot, or you have something wrong with your car.

how many miles does it have?

you should make sure to keep up on the maintenence schedule in your manual, also replace your pcv valve, and your fuel filter about every 15k miles. If that doesn't solve your problem you might want to take a look at your upstream oxygen sensors.

btw, I get 18-19 mpg in the city with my m6

also in regards to the !egr mod. check out shoebox's site here.

look under keep or remove if you want to see pos/neg side of this mod and what the egr system does.

also with your OBDII camaro your computer will throw trouble codes once you do this unless you get it programmed out.

Like said above something must be wrong with the car, or you have a heavy foot.

When my car was stock, actually untill I put gears in my car (had CAI, 2800 stall converter, cutout, cople other little things), I got noghitn less than 16mpg in the city, and on long trips I got 32-35mpg on the highway.

Now with my 3.73's I'm lucky if I get 20mpg on the highway, usually around 18.

I have a 95 t/a with 3.23 gears, no cat, hooker cat back and k&n cai. Other than that all stock. I just checked gas mileage and got 24 mpg. I was probably 80% highway but did at least (5) 1/4 mile blasts also. I also would recommend that you check into something other than removing your egr sytem. Just my 2cents

My car has 113k miles on it so it does have a lot. I got it recently so I dont know how its been running.

I just changed all the filters within the past 300 miles and almost al lthe fluids. The pcv valve was changed as well. I don't pound the pedal too often, the area i drive is like sub-urban.

How do I check the condtion of my upstream oxygen sensors?

Re: Free mods hurt gas mileage?

113k miles is quite alot on the O2's IF they are original. There is a test procedure on this page here.

usually a bad o2 sensor or a serious vacuum leak is what causes fuel economy problems, if the other tune up stuff mentioned doesn't help.

Re: Free mods hurt gas mileage?

ahh yes...another f-body member out there like me. Drives his f-body daily and puts many miles on it and once the performance but also wants the gas mileage. I been in this dilemma for the past 4 years of my life man...There are some mods you can do that will not hurt and even sometimes it may help ur gas mileage. I get between 20-22 MPG usually....but take notice i have 2.73's and usually drive my car very nicely to conserve fuel...ill hop on it every now and then....but i save most of that for the track. 111K miles
