For Folks who has MSD Ignition System
For Folks who has MSD Ignition System
How do you guys like your MSD? Worth the $$$... Easy to install?
Which one do you prefer MSD 6A or MSD 6AL?
The difference between the two is that the The MSD 6AL shares the same proven circuitry of the 6A with the addition of a built-in adjustable rev limiter. The combination of powerful sparks with the safety of a Soft Touch Rev Control is what makes the 6AL the most popular ignition control in the world. MSD first developed the Soft Touch rev control to prevent overrev damage to your motor in the event of a missed shift or driveline failure. The rpm limit is adjustable in 100 rpm increments with MSD’s plug-in modules. When the engine reaches your selected limit, the Soft Touch circuitry begins dropping the spark to various cylinders. On the next cycle, these plugs are fired again to prevent fuel from loading up in the cylinder. The result is a smooth and accurate limiting action without backfires or roughness.

I have a 6A on my LT1 with some other mods and it makes a difference in idle and throttle response no doubt. Seems like I might have picked up a little gas mileage with it also. You can tell an immediate difference in the way your car idles and runs. They are not that expensive and if you are planning future mods go ahead and get a 6A or 6AL. I bought the 6A because I have a brain and use it to not over rev among other things. Either 6 is a good mod. Easy to install too. I mounted mine under my relay box on the drivers side under the hood. Away from heat and can't move around. Has a little pad to mount it on there. You will have to take out youe air intake tube while you install it. Buy the GM coil adapter harness also and save so much time and wire cutting. MSD has install directions with it and on their website.
Traction was somewhat laughable with the 3.73's and the 2400. The 2400 was an el cheapo stock sized converter I picked up just to deal with the 850 idle (creeping got annoying, this solved it). I have a 9.5" 3k stall from Edge waiting to go in with my heads and cam though. Should prove even more intersting
I based my opinion on the 6A from my own experience as well. I found it to be useless. Fresh plugs and wires made more of a difference. I don't think it'd hurt anything, but neither do I see it as much of a benefit. The 6AL for nitrous is a no brainer though, that's cheap insurance.
