Flywheel grinding?
Flywheel grinding?
I had my transmission rebuilt recently (A4). The day I picked ity up from the shop, the flywheel would grind on the starter opening. It was not the up and down movement, where you can shim the starter to move it farther away, but a front and back movement of the flywheel itself. I checked it and it was bolted tightly and not loose, but whenever I give more than 50% throttle from a dead stop or I'm cruising from a 50+roll and give it enough gas to downshift, I can hear the grind. At this point, I have even grinded some of the starter housing to try and give it more room but it still does it. ANy ideas, as I am concerned that it may catch and stick and cause some major damage to either the tranny or engine. Any input would be greatly appreciated,
Kyle

Re: Flywheel grinding?
I can only think of three possibilities.
1) They took off the flywheel becusae they are dumb and don't know that it's not necessary to do that and put it back on backwards
2) They are stupid and took the flywheel off, got it mixed up with another chevy one and put the wrong one on.
3) They don't have your converter on all the way and they forced the tranny on and now the flexplate is flexing (no pun intended) inwards towards the engine and hitting the starter housing.
Have you considered taking it backa nd askin them what's going on?
EDIT: I've removed the tranny from my LT-1 cars 5 times now...and still all three of these are a huge stretch. Good luck though.

Re: Flywheel grinding?
You can remove the access plate and look up at it. The torque converter flanges should be flush to the flexplate. IF it were backwards, I think there would be a small gap at each of the bolt holes, or your flexplate would be bowed...either should be obvious. You could also start it at that point and see if it spins true. I just had mine off and the weight should be facing the motor, but the holes are offset, so I don't think you can physically install it backwards? <shrug>
Re: Flywheel grinding?
So you don't think it is probable that it was installed backwards? I even grounded about an 1/8" off the starter housing to try and give it more room. It still hits. If I'm at a stop sign, waiting to turn, when i give it a little gas and start turning, I can hear it. It will also hit when I give it gas to accelerate from 50+mph. Any ideas on what to do to fix would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Kyle

Re: Flywheel grinding?
well, first you need to take the inspection plate off like mentioned above and look at it to see if the flexplate is bowed. This is probablyt he case...which means it's eithe ron backwards OR the torque converter isn't on all the way (which i doubt...becuase youd' be having other problems at this point...but possible i suppose). either way, you are going to be unbolting the tranny to fix either problem.
Re: Flywheel grinding?
Ni it is the flexplate hitting the starter housing. I've seen the gnash marks of the constant hitting. I didn't see anything abnormal about the flexplate being bowed but will be more specific in my checking now. If not bowed, I am going to take it back to the shop to have them check it.
