Flushing radiator

I have a 97 z28 and I want to flush the radiator. I don't have the owners manual so I am wondering how i should do this and what antifreeze i should use?

There is some rust in the line so I bought some prestone radiator super cleaner just in case a regular hose wash doesnt clean it up. should i use this stuff to clean the radiator out?

Does anyone know the size of the radiator, It says a 12 quart radiator will need two bottles of this stuff.

Is there anything else i should do?

Re: Flushing radiator

do the drain plugs at the same time to drain all the antifreeze
all you gotta do to drain it is go on the passenger side and right there is a little plug on the bottom, pull it and drain, shoot it with water, then plug back in and fill with your mix

Thanks for the reply. Does anyone have a picture of what the drain plugs looks like? I found the radiator drain but my uncle told me that i should drain the engine coolant as well. How do i do that? He said i may or may not be able to do it without a hoist.

The engine block holds quite a bit of coolant. On the passenger side, the knock sensor is the drain plug and is threaded into the block near the motor mount. Be sure when you re-install it not to over tighten it. It torques down at a low setting (approximately 20 ft-lbs). On the driver's side there is also a drain plug, right next to the motor mount. Be prepared to get soaked as the coolant likes to "bounce" all over the place. Also make sure you use distilled water to mix with your coolant and not tap water (contains minerals). I'd also recommend you premix your coolant/water refill so you get the right ratio. No more than 50/50, I run 30% coolant/70% water in San Diego.

actually, tap water can be used if you have no source of distilled water (says in the manual)
also, when you pull the drain plugs (like obe1 said it's the knock sensor and one of the driver side also), if nothing comes out, poke it with a screwdriver and wait for the deluge

Re: Flushing radiator

Well i finished. It was sooo messy. The fluid inside was cleaner than it looked from on top. I let the the thing drain by that black nut at the bottom. I also cleaned the reservoir with a syringe. I flushed it out a few times and let the engine run a few times for a while to clean out the engine because i couldn't find the plugs. I probably didn't get everything out but I did get a majority of it out and new stuff in. Thanks for the help. The temperature is the same as before i did it but its a good thing that I did to have a peace of mind. I have to do the oil tomorrow.
