FLP headers and spark plug question?
FLP headers and spark plug question?
Are there any tips to getting the spark plugs and the spark plug wires on with the FLP headers on an LT1? I think that I have the spark plugs in good, but I don't think that the wires are on well. I have some heat sleves on the critical wires. Anyway, any tips?
plugs and wires first then headers?
any tricks to get the wires on good and snug?
Thanks in advance

Re: FLP headers and spark plug question?
I just got done doing plugs and wires on my '96 Z with Dyanatech headers (same thing as FLP's). It is a PITA!!!! You should be able to get to plugs 1,3,7,2,4 with a regular spark plug socket, For 6,8, remove the starter for easier access (5/8" offset wrench to remove plugs) and the hideous plug #5 I used the offset 5/8" wrench again that worked like a charm. When putting things back together I also highly recommend the Accel shorty plugs (P526S) that you can get through Summit for $12.39/piece
! Makes life a hell of a lot easier. To get the wires on, I loosened up the passenger side header from the head and was able to get wires on plugs 6 and 8. I used a 1200 degree protective sleeve from DEI on those wires. Driver side is easy, except for plug #5! I hate the positioning of that plug, but thread it in nice and slow as to not crossthread it and use the offset wrench to tighten it in. I placed the plug boot over the plug for #5 and used a large flathead screwdriver wedged in between the primary and boot and pushed it on. I used MSD 8.5mm wires and used the protective sleeving on plug wire #5 also. These headers just plain and simple SUCK for plug access and wire access. I am used to my MAC headers on my other Z and I can do plugs and wires in less than an hour! Good luck and if you have any other questions let me know!

Re: FLP headers and spark plug question?
You gotta get one of these ratchet wrenches and this socket from slp.

I couldn't imagine changing plugs without them!

Re: FLP headers and spark plug question?
I've done these a few times. you got a couple of ways for the wires.
think small, you can try to order the GM 7mm wires. They will fit in stock locations right up against the block and will help keep them away.
Or, get overhead wire kit and make custom wires which it a PAIN but worth it when its done.
as for accessing the plug. Well do the best you can, I don't loosen stuff or take the starter off but I have smaller hands. You can make a wrench also for these plugs to help with the impossible ones. I don't use shorty plugs either but I could see how they would help a lot.

Re: FLP headers and spark plug question?
I have the plugs in nice and tight. I used a tool set from Sears called the gear ratchet (Every one should get this set). It has a passthrough feature that makes sparkplugs a snap. As for the type of plugs, I do run nitrous and use a colder plug. Does Accel make a colder shorty plug for nitrous?
Also the problem is more in the wires. I have them all on, but on the problem plugs, I didn't hear them "snap" into place. I use a large flathead screwdriver on the turn of the boot. They look on as well as the others, but I am not sure if they are really on good.
