Flowed my heads...Not what you would think for a 10 sec. car.

This is an average of all ports.

lift int. exh.
.200 121.9 101.3
.300 176.9 132.0
.400 216.8 153.3
.450 231.9 160.2
.500 242.4 165.7
.550 238.5 169.8
.600 230.8 172.4
.650 229.8 174.3
.700 227.9 175.6

I dynoed 427 427 dyno (cut/past link) on pump gas and 439.7 439 dyno on race gas. All dyno runs were made through a 9" and 4.71 gears so I would guess 15-20 rwhp down from a stock rear end with 4.10s from what I have seen other cars loose from a 9". Car ran what was in the sig. I think this is the perfect example of how peak flow numbers dont show the potential of a head to make power and illustrates that there are so many factors to come into play in the search for HP. This was on a small intake runner and 2.0/1.56 vlaves. Just another example of a motor making good horsepower on a "low flow bench numbers" head.

Oh..hehehe..it made 502/535 on a small 75 shot pulling 4 deg of timing. (made 422 on motor that day)

Wow that is impressive, is that on a custom cam? WOW! Yeah I'm not a beliver on flow numbers at all these days, some guys that flow a fraction of some numbers dyno higher, crazy Congrats bud! What bench did you use?

Bunker the bench is a SuperFlow 1020. I have a feeling these #'s will have some folks scratching their heads, LOL... no pun intended.

That's a huge cam though for a 355! Coustom grind Cam Motion solid roller (255/263 @ 50, 656/628 lift, 110 LS)

bunker Yea..custom cam and bdc95TA listed the specs. Its not as big as it sounds though. Throw and AC on this car, change the suspension alittle and I would drive it daily. The low end power is brutal and it doesn't surge untill it gets to about 1800 rpms. its acts pretty nice on the street actually. I think that people here are caught up to peak flow numbers too much. There are many factors that go into making a good head. Thanks for the congrats.

jkipp84 Thank ya

SAR - ya think..I still doubt people will listen or take the time to research what all it takes for a head to make power besides "peak flow numbers" . And we aren't even going to get into how much of a varience there can be between flow benches. Now when are my new heads going to be ready

bdc95ta It looks bigger than it acts...refer to above. When I first built it I drove itquite often. One example is I headed out of town.. changed tires..raced it..and drove it home. Averaged 22 mpg including the trips down the track. Honestly a 306 prolly sounds more radical than my car and some of the newer big hyd. cams make mine sound like a girly car. My next cam I may be agree with ya that its big..hehehehe.

It would be neat to see what kind of gains you could get from a nice set of AFRs or something.

Maybe flow numbers arnt as important as some people would like us to believe?

Re: Flowed my heads...Not what you would think for a 10 sec. car.

we will find out here shortly. I'm upgrading the heads/intake. Flow numbers are a tool to evaluate the head..but you have to look at the complete setup and what that head is going on.

interesting post......................i think everyone forgets..........no matter how much your heads flow..............the LTX intakes only flow 230ish or something similar........so any flow above that is not being fully utilized.

Some have..not everyone...ehhehehe. My new heads have been flowed with intake on it...and changes made to it. But your right about most people forget about it. I should have flow numbers of my old heads with my lt1 intake(not stock) on them sometime in the next week or so. But we did see a stock lt4 drop about 40-45 cfm on a ported lt4 head.

Those are awesome numbers!!! It just goes to show you that super head flow doesn't mean **** it you've got the stock intake, wrong cam, inadequate valvetrain, etc. Trust me, I know

What it means is that, by itself, super headflow doesn't mean a whole lot. The secret is in the combination, and there is a reason some combinations run better than others.

Your head flow number's max 242@.500 is enough to make about 497FWHP or about 447RWHP with a stick.
No big secret.

Small heads = big cam to make it run.

Re: Flowed my heads...Not what you would think for a 10 sec. car.

Why is the HP/Torque curves crossing at nearly 5500 instead of 5250? Peak HP is at a surprisingly low rpm considering the solid roller... Nice numbers.
