Flexplate hitting starter help?
Flexplate hitting starter help?
I just replaced my flexplate in my car because it was cracked. After putting everything back together, when I would cruise at 55 in OD and then give it enough gas to downshift into 3rd, there was a knocking sound. I have found out that the flexplate is hitting the starter right on the flat part where the opening to the starter is, running parallel to the flexplate. I know you can shim the starter to adjust the the starter up and down but there is no adjustment for it front and back. As far as the flexplate goes, it is installed right and the car runs fine normally. Is there something I'm missing or does someone know of a way to allow more space between the starter and flexplate? Thanks in advance,
Kyle

Hmmm....I can think of why it will only start doing it at 55. But anyway, the only thing I can think of is...
1. You put your flex-plate on backwards.
2. Or. more likely your starter is old and its not dissengaging properly. Still makes no sense why it would only do it at high speed.
How are you so sure that that is the problem?

I have pulled the starter and can see the area on the starter that is being hit by the flexplate. I can actually get it to do it with the car in gear while power breaking. I am positive it is the starter because after starting the car, I removed the starter while running and could not get it to make the knocking sound anymore. I also thought that maybe the flexplate was put on backwards. I had the tranny rebuilt by a shop a few months ago. After a few weeks, it was making a screeching sound so, I took it back to the tranny shop and they told me it was a cracked flexplate. I took it apart and sure enough it was cracked. I know I put it on the same way it came off but am not sure if it was put on correctly at the tranny shop when they rebuilt it. I checked my brothers 92Z and his is on the same way. The only point of reference on the flexplate I have is the angled weight piece welded to the face of it. Should it be facing the motor (front of the car) or the tranny (back of the car)? Thanks in advance for any help,
Kyle

The best way to check is to go under the car and remove the flexplate / tc cover. Look at the 3 bolts that hold the TC to the flexplate. The knotches or holes on the flexplate should be bent towards the torque converter if you get what I'm saying. When you look at it you'll be able to tell.
