Fixing SES light - MALF11 (MIL Lamp failure)
Fixing SES light - MALF11 (MIL Lamp failure)
When I purchased my car the ses light was either not connected or burnt out. I am pretty sure it was disabled though.
Any suggestions on how I should go about fixing the MIL lamp? It is throwing a code that makes my fans run all the time and is very annoying.

At least yours is throwing a code saying that the SES isn't working. Mine hasn't worked at all since I bought my car.
I took the cluster out and the bulb is not removable. I think it's an LED or something.
When I bought the car I got an extended warranty with it and took it to the dealer to have them fix it and they couldn't figure out if it was the wiring to the cluster, or if the cluster itself was bad. And that my warranty didn't pay them to figure it out. I guess troubleshooting a problem isn't part of the warranty or soemthing.
I left mad. Whatever.

Are you getting a P1661 code? You might even be getting another code that needs attention. I don't think the MIL malfunctoin turns on the fans.
The blue pcm connector (C4) pin 9 (brn/wht wire) is the control for the MIL. Try to prove whether the wiring/bulb or pcm might be bad. The pcm puts a ground out to turn the lamp on. You can disconnect the blue plug and ground pin 9 in the harness to see if the MIL comes on (key ON for this test). If it does not, then something is wrong in the wiring/cluster/bulb.
If it does, then wiring/cluster/bulb is ok. Then check to see if ground is coming off pin 9 on the pcm when the MIL is supposed to be on.
Leave the key OFF when unplugging and plugging pcm connectors.
Note: that brn/wht wire goes through connector C230, cavity "B", that is in the RH kick panel. (your car won't have the keyless entry module in the pic, but the connector should be there). A previous owner may have jacked with it, there.

Thanks, thats exactly what I needed to hear. I'll look at it tomorrow.
The MALF11 is the only code free scan is showing when the fans are kicking on.
Although I have gotten code 48 (mass air), twice out of 7 trips since the OBDI conv., the fans will still come on when it's just the MIL code.
