Finally Got The Motor Out!! Need some ideas!

Ok, so I've pulled the motor on my 95 Z, and am going to have it rebuilt. When I got the oil pan off, there was, I can only discribe it as silt, covering the oil pick up screen. There was about 2 or 3mm of the crap on the screen!! NO WONDER I LOST OIL PRESSURE!! I am not sure how in the world all that crap got in there to block the oil pick up screen/tube, but it did. I also am going to replace the clutch while I'm in there. Anyone know a good shop around Casper, Wyoming that would do good work on a rebuild?? Not looking to put a lot of extra cool stuff into it, just want it rebuilt to spec and running good. Also ideas on a good clutch? Don't need a crazy drag clutch but a good quality one to replace the worn out original. Also, can I get away with putting a mild cam in without messing the computer up? I don't have a programmer for the car but wouldnt mind adding a mild cam while its apart.

Thanks for all the help!

I would look at the many of cam threads already started. You may talk to a vendor like lloyd elliot. I would also recommend a set of pushrods, roller rockers, and a tune from pcmforless. Good luck.

agreed on looking at other build threads, im in the process of a cam swap right now so a lot of info is fresh in my head there is also a good cam swap guide on another forum, but any cam swap would required upgraded springs in which point you might as well do the rocker arms also and then you'd still have to get it tuned.....

Re: Finally Got The Motor Out!!

not getting a tune on any cam is stupid, it will not use the cams full potential.

Just get a mail order tune and leave it at the least.

If you get a cam, you need springs/retainers/locks, roller rockers, hardened pushrods, lifters (stock can be used if in good condition.) it all adds up.

if your going to do a small cam, the smallest i would go is the cc305. you have a stick car so no problems with a torque converter.

so get your motor rebuilt and buy the parts listed above n ur set.

btw, if you go with a small enough cam like the 305, you can get away with buying just the springs, and reusing the stock retainers and locks. pm me if you want details on that, can get away with spending about 100$ that route. lifters can be had for a little over 100$, pushrods are rather inexpensive, and thats about it..

Re: Finally Got The Motor Out!!

DO YOU MEAN SILT OR GOOP?
Gritty or Ultra smooth like pudding?

I've seen many o cars with the 'goop' either in the pan or all over the rockers and lifter valley. Usually it's a coolant issue that has leaked into the oil over time. NOT tons at once, but tiny amounts over a long period. I had a ol boat that had the Mercruiser 5.7, both heads were cracked and P.O. must have ran it sucking in lake water and there was a light brown, mayonase looking goop that took over 2-weeks to drain from the block to the point that I could see the crank and such.

Had you noticed ANY loss of coolant in the past year or so?
BY any chance, do you still have any goop/oil left over? Maybe the filter?
(that would be interesting to cut the filter open and have a look see..)
OR depending on the amount, send it off to Analysts INC. and for about 15.00 they can test about 18 different items that could be trouble if in the higher levels.

Have you pulled the mains and rod bearings? Down to the copper?
I believe it goes to the crank first then up to the cam/lifter valley. (you might want to flush out the lifters or buy new)
If you do rebuild, get the lifter galley plugs out and scrub it good, and don't forget about the other passages too!

I dont think it was like a pudding. It was like a very fine sand almost. It was only on the screen with the oil pickup tube. The oil in the pan did not look bad at all, just this crazy build up on the screen. I am going to take the motor to a shop and have a total rebuild done. So I hope they get it all cleaned out. I hace not seen any loss of coolant, and I fluched the coolant when I first bought the car about a year ago. Thanks for all the input!
