few questions about SLP header install

I'm getting ready to install my used SLP headers and I have a few questions about this, hoping someone can help.

1. Is there a gasket that needs to go between the headers and Y-pipe? If I'm not mistaken some flanges are designed to not need one...is this one of them?

2. Do you guys recommend installing the header gaskets (fel pro 1406) dry or with silicon? I'm using Ultra Copper O2 sensor safe...

3. I'm actually using Injuneer's guide to installing JBA headers for this to get an idea of what I'm doing, and in there he recommends using anti-seize on the header bolts, but with Stage 8 locking. I'm using ARP header bolts since I didn't even want to try to get my hands in there to work the stupid clips on the stage 8's, and I have heard some people recommend using threadlocker on the bolts...anyone have any suggestions on this? I'm a bit worried the anti-seize is going to allow them to back out easily.

4. Has anyone ever just bolted a muffler with some tubing out the side of the car on their Y-pipe? I'm thinking about tacking a Flowmaster 3 on it in place of the full exhaust...how loud would this be (I know pretty loud, but like cutout loud?) and would there really be any benefit over the stock exhaust? (a cat-back is out of my price range right now).

Thanks in advance!

I'd recommend no RTV sealant, I just used Fel-Pro gaskets dry and haven't had any problems. If you do use the sealant, the next time you remove your gaskets it's going to be pretty messy.

Definitely use anti-seize, it makes it a lot easier to remove the bolts if you ever have to change the gasket. Just retighten them after a few heat cycles and they should stay.

Yes u need a collector gasket between the y pipe and the header. It is the 3 bolt flange design right? If so yes u need the gaskets.

yeah u can just stick a flow master on the end if u want. Gains would be minimal.

actually its a 2 bolt flared flange...the fllared part fits into another almost ball end in the y-pipe.

Anyone else? Thanks for the replies so far!

I installed single cat SLP's on mine, I used SLP's "donut" gaskets for the y pipe to header connections, there is no way they would seal tight without those, they are a very thick donut like gasket.

ok thanks. I found some for sale on SLP 's site, but they want $11 plus $8 shipping for them Think I'll take a trip to the local auto parts store today.

Has anyone else had any experience just welding a muffler onto their y-pipe? Interested to hear what you thought and if there was a noticeable gain over the stock exhaust system...

yep, good call - found them there for around $3 each...much better and they are sintered metal donuts from Fel Pro. For anyone looking, they are part # 60986 - exhaust flange gasket.

Anyone on the muffler thing?
