You can read about the cooling system and testing here.

Check your coolant temp sensor in the waterpump.

Re: Fans are not working?

Pull the MAF sensor plug. This SHOULD turn the fans on. If they dont then either the fuse, wiring or fan motors are bad. If they do work then like said above the problem is probably the temp sensor in the waterpump not reading the correct temp.

Re: Fans are not working?

If I unplug the MAF sensor the fans should come on whether the temp sensor is working or not? Also I turned on the the a/c and the fans still will not kick on. I am going to pull the MAF sensor and see what happens then I am going to check the water pump sensor. Thank you all for the help Hopefully I can get this fix before the summer goes away

Re: Fans are not working?

to check to make sure your fans are working properly, disconnect the fans wiring and connect the the wires to the battery. fans should cut on. if fans do cut on, then your thermostat or engine coolant temp sensor has gone out. i had the same problem about 2 yrs ago. we replaced the thermo but they whoudnt come on. never replaced the sensor though. i finally just put a switch under my dash to cut them on. if you decide to use a switch you will need a 40 to 50 amp switch. i burnt up three switch before a 50 amp switch did the trick.

Re: Fans are not working?

what is the best way to clean the fusible links. The cover to the fusible links came off years ago so they have been expose and they are very dirty. I thought about baking soda with alittle water. If there is something better please let me know.

Disconnect and shine them with wire brush. What troubleshooting have you done so far?

Re: Fans are not working?

I got the fans to work only by disconnecting MAF. Then I hook up the MAF and let the car idle and it started to over heat because the fans still will not turn on by themselves. So my relays and fuses are good, I clean the fusible links and I replace the fan motor. Next thing is the temp sensor

Fans Not Working - 93 Z28 6Spd

Hi All,

My radiator fans are not coming on even when the AC is on. I read through shoebox's steps for checking the circuits and the fans come on when jumpering OBD/DLC connectors A & B, which leads me to believe that there is not an issue with the circuit itself. I pulled the coolant temp sensor on the water pump, tested the ohms by putting it in room temp water and hot water and they are within specs (~80 degrees F = ~2700 ohms, and ~180 degrees = ~360 ohms), tested the amps on the connecting wire to the coolant temp gauge from the PCM (yellow & black wires) and it gave me 5v right on the nuts per Shoebox and the Haynes manual.

Any idea what else it could be? The sensor is good and I don't think the wires from the sensor to PCM are shoring out anywhere since they are returning 5v. If I have to breakdown and wire up a manual switch I can try that. Pretty noob to wiring, does anyone have a pic of exactly which wires to splice into? Do I just splice into the wires from the PCM.

Anyone have a youtube or other video link of step by step how to do the manual fan switch install?

Would these be the correct locations to splice into? Would I need to also run a ground from the same location as the splice?

Not the best pic, but would I splice into the connector (top right) or do I need to unbolt the PCM and get to something in there?

Re: Fans are not working?

Shoebox has the wiring diagram for a manual switch and photos of the location.

Since 93 is the earlier Fan 1/Fan2 setup, switch would be different.

93 might be a bit different in other ways. There is no ECM code for the fan relay circuit like there is for later years.
