Fan Question

here it is straight to the point.....

On my 96 t/a the fans don't kick on when they should when the temp reaches around 180-200 to keep it cool at 180. But when i turn the max A/C on or just the plain A/C the fans kick on and keep it cool. So everytime i am stopped i have to turn the A/C on so it will not heat up. Of course when im driving it stays the right temperature but they just don't want to kick on when i am at a stop. Anyone know what the problem could be or anything???
Input is appreciated.

Re: Fan Question

Do you know that the stock fans don't come on until 226°? You may be perceiving a problem that is not there.

Re: Fan Question

if anyone knows....it would be shoebox!! one fan turns on when you turn the a/c on(or defrost for that matter). not exactly sure the reason but I would speculate it is so that air is flowing over the condenser(radiator type thing in front of the actuall radiator) to cool it. at the 226^ that shoebox mentione that is when the other fan turns on. if you have the a/c turned off no fans are on til 226^ then both turn on.

you can program them to turn on sooner or install a switch to turn them on. there is more than one how to page out there about installing switches for the fans. I did it kinda getto and jsut took some insulation off the wires to turn the fans on and have a alligator clip that I clip on there to tun them on. bad thing is I have to get under the hood to do it....jsut been to lazy to run the wires inside and connect to a switch.

Re: Fan Question

I was going to post the same problem or not.

If the fans come on at 226*, when do they turn off?

I am planning on installing a manual fan switch to help with traffic heating. I have a convertible and rarely have the top up so turning on the A/C is futile. Actually I have turned on the A/C to cool the engine down but it does not do a killer job plus additional drag is added from the A/C unit. The manual switch should do the job in Sacramento's 3-digit temps and slow freeway (traffic) speeds.

If I purchase a 160* thermostat will that help? Would I need to make any other changes other than installing the thermostat?

Re: Fan Question

This will tell you what you need to know about the fan system. Donny O, both fans always run in a 3 relay system.
tomatocity, the fans switch will help you, as well as the 160° thermostat. There is nothing else you really have to do.
