Fair?

Yesterday I took my car down to the local mechanic shop to have some things looked at. Its been running kinda sluggish. ses light is on and has a mis fire and its running to lean. Well they called to tell me that my waterpump is leaking and that we need to replace the whole water pump. For labor and parts its going to be $589. Is that a fair price for parts and labor for a water pump?. Other work was not included in the price.

Frankly speaking, that's outrageous. A new GM water pump costs $200 (retail). If the shop upcharges that by 20% you're now at $240. That leaves $349 for labor....at $70 an hour that's 5 hours! It really doesn't take 5 hours unless you're looking for your tools for the first 2 hours....

If you're mechanically inclined you can do this yourself and save a ton.

That's over priced. That's what it costed me and I had to buy an electric pump + new stock pump + labor.

Sounds like your waterpump is leaking causing the opti to make your engine misfire. take it to another shop!
