Fah-RUSSS-stration!! with this obstinate '96 ignition problem...
Come one, come all, laugh at my silly story. Then smack me upside the head for missing the obvious, and kindly point me at it.
Please?
I'm learning a LOT more about OBD-2 and late-model GM engine management than I really wanted to, yet still the beast runneth-not. So...
Background:
My best friend's gotta Korny-Kaliforny-stock 1996 Z-28 M6 which is behaving badly, and he has enlisted my help in it's repair.
Replaced the distributor a yearish-half ago when it ranneth-not last, and 'twas fixed. All was Roses and Song, 'til a foul curse befell us these three months anon.
To wit; of a rainy night here in Palo Alto whilst driving slowly on a residential street, the motor up and quit with no warning. With a quick call, a flashlight, and some wire-wiggling, restart is achieved and we drive a few blocks to my house and park.
The car sat for a couple hours, and had to be towed home. My friend is no stranger to home-wrenching, and he subsequently arranged...
New key and ignition switches to replace the wire-kinked-broken-bits originals. No fix, but needed.
Ignition control module.
Coil.
Distributor vacuum harness.
Distributor. (Cleaning it didn't do it, though it was dirty.)
Cap 'n Rotor. Rotor lacked continuity.
Rebuilt most of the relevant wiring-harness plugs.
New PCM(!) (Dunno if the old-un's fried or not.)
Most lately, replaced the crankshaft position sensor.
Net result:
When the new PCM went in, it STARTED!! It ran smoother than it has in a year!
Once.
Fer a bit.
And never since.
Now we've got zero spark, and all I could ever get out of a loaner code-reader was "Link error."
Aww, Nertz.
Now that we've put in the new CKP sensor, I'm planning on re-doing all the no-spark tests, (not tonight, however,) and thanks to The Shoebox, I'm looking forward to checking the entire wiring-harness from the PCM to the end-plugs, if neccesary. Lucky me.
So:
Anything I missed? Got no pride left, me. Tell me the obvious stuff, even. I'm figuring it out as I go, really. The "replace-da-parts" bit isn't doing that great.
Secondly, dose anyone know where I might a nice definitive treatise on the Means, Modes, and Operational Theory of the Opti-Spark Igniton System and its Role and Integration in '96 LT-1 Powertrain Management?
Yeah, I know. Just the world on a plate.
But really, ANY info I can look at would be very welcome.
Gonna make this creature run again if it kills me, I have determined. And well.
Tha-hanx a whole bunch,
Milky

Check for continuity on the coil wire
Check the fuses
Its OBD II, what about the Crankshaft Position Sensor? Im not sure what all the ycontrol on a F-Body but on alot of stuff they control pulse width, spark timing etc.

well my car wouldnt start once and a mechanic said to crank it with the gas pedal to the floor. apparently it puts it into a "limp home" mode. might not help, but it might be worth a shot
