External/Internal Balancing and Flexplate Selection
External/Internal Balancing and Flexplate Selection
Hey guys...
This is sort of a dumb question and I'm embarrassed to say I didn't even think about it until today when I saw something mentioned in another post...
I have an all forged Golen 383 LT1 Competition short block bottom end, and I'm pretty positive the crank is internally balanced, front and rear...
That being said, the TCI flexplate I currently have bolted to it appears to be an externally balanced plate. See the pics below...
It has this plate on it...

Rather than this one...

Fortunately, the engine has only been idled on the stand a couple of times to make sure it worked...
Three questions...
1. Does it hurt to have the externally balanced flexplate on an internally balanced engine? I would assume the answer is yes, because it will cause major vibration as rpms increase, but I wanted to defer to the experts...
2. If it is ok, should the weight face the engine or the transmission? At present mine has the weight on the engine side of the flexplate...
3. If it's not ok, is anyone in the market for an externally balanced flexplate... practically new...

Like you have observed you cannot mix the two. If the engine is internally balanced than you need a neutral balanced flexplate. If you now have an externally balanced flexplate you can have the weight removed and have it neutral balanced. If they are unmatched you will have a terrible vibration as you were thinking. You are correct on the facing of the weight.
Hey hot_red_z28, sorry I had to post here but your mail box was full after I got your reply. Ill take the flexplate for that price, just let me know when you are ready to take it off and I'll send the money.
