exhaust recommendations for stroker rebuild?

hi guys...getting ready to rebuild my 95' Z with a 383 stroker. i currently have a stock exhaust except for replacing the cat with a test pipe years back since there are no emissions checks where i live. really, the only concern i have is that i don't want the exhaust setup i have now to hurt the power that the new stroker setup will make. i don't really care about it being louder than it is...unless it's just necessary to get the flow....just want to make sure i get something that will let the 383 breathe. any recommendations? i'm not looking to spend a ton of $$ since the stroker is already going to be a chunk of change but also don't want put on an exhaust i will regret later. could i just get some headers and use my existing pipes and muffler from there back or would this still be way too restrictive? any thoughts and links to good places to buy would be very much appreciated.

Id say def. get some long tube headers while your at it. you really need them for the eng. to do its thing, and its WAY easier to do now. if you run out of money, you can always leave the stock catback now and replace it later. ofcourse the stock catback is restrictive, but its no diff. replacing it now unlike the headers. hooker and magnaflow make great catbacks that sound really good, and I have the edelbrock rpm catback that sounds really good (IMHO anyways). although Ive been kickin around the idea of true duals like I had on my Iroc. just not sure if I want all the noise the true duals bring. but I believe true duals will make more power then just about any single exh. on a 383 with a sizable cam and head work.

I will be throwing in my 383 very soon, she will be flowing through a set of Jet Hot Long tube headers, a Jet hot 3" y-pipe without cats, and an SLP Loudmouth. Its loud and free flowing, its an aquired sound though, some people do not like it, i love it

To do it on the cheap, I would do LTs with a cut-out after the Y-Pipe and then replace the cat-back later (or never depending on the car's use). You might also price a true dual set up from an exhaust shop-might not be as much as you would think.

Re: exhaust recommendations for stroker rebuild?

thanks for the prompt replies! since i know very little about the exhaust system and all the parts that are involved, can someone tell me exactly all the parts i would need for a given scenario? just want to make sure i buy everything i need for my mechanic to do the install. as i mentioned, i took my cat out long ago and just have a straight pipe.

so let's say for example that i went with some LT's and a 3-inch Y-pipe and left my catback setup the same for now. would i just go to summit or jeg's and find the stuff? if anybody can paste in a cpl links of everything i would need for this setup, i would appreciate it

http://www.thunderracing.com/catalog...&vid=4&pcid=52

66-2231 Hooker Super Competition Long Tube Headers, 1993-1997 LT1 F-Body $429.99

95-LT1-Y Mufflex Y-pipe for Hooker Long Tube LT1 F-Body Headers $250.00

I would get the ceramic coated headers or stainless. You should just need LTs and the Y-pipe. Call Thunder Racing up for more info, they are always very helpful. Summit and Jegs are OK too; Thunder ships faster and they will match Jegs or Summit.

Same thing from LG, Cheaper Y-pipe there.

rdavis...

thanks for the links! i noticed you had shorties on your 93'. is that b/c you have emissions to worry about? since i don't have to worry about emissions and don't plan on having clearance issues (i.e. lowering), i should just go with LT's right?

Re: exhaust recommendations for stroker rebuild?

I have shorties b/c I didn't know any better when I put them on. Also they were a lot cheaper. My next upgrade is likely to be LTs or LTs and heads.

No, I don't have to worry about emissions. Don't get shorties.

Sorry to hijack thread and say something totally not related

Rdavis... Peoria? Mudvayne!? WooT You listen to them?

Actually... i'm building a 383 as well, anyone have any sound clips with a 383? I was thinking of going Pacesetter LTs, 3" to 2 1/2" reducer into Summit X Pipe, then Dual Chambered Mufflers (Sweet Thunder) that dump before the axle.

I saw Mudvayne once long b4 they got big. Not my style of music.

Those true dual set ups are awesome but they might be more money (especially if he isn't doing it himself). LOUD *** hell too.

Iroc, do you have any sound clips of your car? I have a 3" edelbrock RPM series laying around that I was thinking of using on my 383, just wondering how its going to sound.

Re: exhaust recommendations for stroker rebuild?

no sound clips, my digi. camera takes films, wonder if it records sounds. prolly not. whereabouts do you live? Im in dearborn heights evenings, but I work in farmington hills right off 275 and 96 and 696. I could poss. meet you somewhere if you wanted to hear it. I think it sounds badass for a Ypipe system. not raspy at all, but not very loud. but loud enough. I do think Id make a bit more power with a real xpipe/dual exh. system though. but I need a better stall conv. and lots of other stuff more for now.
