exhaust

ok guys.. didnt know if this was the right section or not.. but itll have to work...

i have hooker lts with a 3"ory pipe back to a dump before the axle that is capped off(cut out if you will) then 3" back to a flow master.. not sure what series with it dumped about 6" off the muffler.. no cats...

now i also have an slp muffler with the dual exit on one side layin round the shop that i have thought about using..it would put all the sound to the back and keep the exhaust off the car and out of the cab..

the current problem i have is:
1. bad interior resonation(sp?)
2. little carbon peices ruining the paint
3. im not a big fan of the "factory style exuast" (ie one side of the muffler is in and out and the other is just out)

now my question is.. do you guys think it would still sound ok or do you think it will be loud and obnoxious.. my idea of a good sounding exhaust is deep smooth rumble..not loud raspy crackler.. so has anyone every heard a setup similar to mine or the slp?

Re: exhaust

I've heard SLP gets pretty obnoxious with headers and no cat. If I were you I'd just make my own exhaust system. Some glasspacks or other tube style muffler is what a lot of people like. I know dynomax offers mufflers like that, and I have their catback on my car, it's a lot like the Flowmaster except mellower, and quieter at idle, louder at WOT. There's plenty of options out there for you, you don't have to stick with the catback exhausts that are pre-made.

Re: exhaust

well its not that i have to look for something diff.. i just have the slp muffler laying around the shop and havent ever heard it.. but after hearing the "obnoxious" statement i may just keep it around for another car.. i was actuallly thinking about going with true duals later.. just looking for solutions to my "carbon spot" problems for now.. i hated how the exhaust sounded with tips on the flowmaster..

Re: exhaust

Dual exhaust outlets on one side? If so that's the 2OTL or Two On the Left, which actually sounds VERY nice. Heard it at SLP day with long tubes and it sounded great. Not obnoxious AT ALL. You might be thinking of the Loudmouth, which sounds obnoxious without cats. With cats, it's subjective, I personally think it sounds nice. If I were you I'd hang on to that, do some searching, ppl with that system seem very satisfied with the sound, both stock, headers, etc.

Re: exhaust

I've heard great things about that muffler, if it's the TOTL, but make sure you have the inlets and outlets correct

Re: exhaust

dumping before the axle, or having a cutout before the axle, will cause interior resonation.

Re: exhaust

the cut out before the axle has a cap on it that i pull off for track use.. and the rest of the exaust is dumped off of the muffler(after the axle)

Re: exhaust

The reason you're getting so much droning and interior resonance is because you're using a Flowmaster muffler (those things are famous for being noisy "inside" the car). Especially more so if you aren't running the exhaust out some tailpipes/tips (which would cause the resonance to be a lot worse in the car). Having no catylic converters doesn't help either. Not to mention Flowmaster crossflow mufflers do not flow well at all on modified set-ups...

The muffler you have in your shop is the SLP 2OTL and I'd highly recommend dropping the Flowlessmaster and replacing it with this...You'll actually pick up rearwheel horsepower/torque and the car won't be nearly as loud in the car (yet have a better sound outside).

I love the Flowmaster tone, but this is just my $.02...

Good choice man...Leave it on because you're definitely gaining some nice rwhp/rwtq through that muffler over the Flowmaster on your set-up...

And it is somewhat quiet inside the car, but it sounds much louder/better outside (same thing with the GMMG cat-back I have on my LT1). Just have someone drive down the street while you stand outside and you'll see what I mean.

Re: exhaust

Just about any setup with loudmouth will be borderline obnoxious for some people. High tone, raspy and loud will be exactly what you get and will be further accented with no cats and headers. The 2OTL muffler is a great sounding muffler, as are Borla XR1s. Those will be closer to the sound you want.

Re: exhaust

I have the 2OTL right now with headers and a cat and it is pretty tame at idle. Has a decent low rumble to it, but nothing loud. When you mash the gas it opens up for a pretty good sound - atleast my ears think so I would like to hear my car sometime from the outside at WOT to see what it is like on the outside - sounds all good from the inside! Maybe some very very slight rasp in the upper rpms 4800+ (atleast on my setup)

Right now I am in the process of putting some Hooker Super Comp LTs on and getting rid of that cat - I am fairly confident it will still sound pretty good. It defiantely shouldn't give you a drone sound inside...
