Excessive Underhood Temperature

What can cause the underhood temperature to be too high?

If I drive for 15 mins, the temp gauge never goes over 190', but the air intake bellows gets pertty hot. Hot enough to almost burn you when you touch it.

Is there anyway a faulty temp sensor in the waterpump could cause this? Maybe it's telling the PCM that the coolant temp is cold so it's running lean/rich or something?

Thanks,
Thomas.

Under my hood was always HOT HOT HOT...But when i bought my LT headers the heat was reduced ALOT!

You could also run some kind of ventlation into the engine bay...i dont think the get alot stock

It should be hot. Mine is like walking into Florida when you open up the hood.

All of these cars would benefit from some sort of heat extractor... some way for the heat to vent out once stopped/parked.

You should read the IAT temp if you think it is too hot (scanner or laptop and software needed). That will tell you the air temp coming into the engine. The temps under the hood are just going to be hot. If your engine is running at normal temps, you don't have anything to worry about.

all the LT1s that i saw (stock or modded) have burning burning engines

this is normal for LT1s... dont worrty about it... if you ever get your PCM reprogrammed tell them to leave your fans on for 3 mins after u shut off the car... it helps alot, and helps ventilate the air out

really? i didn't think the PCM programming could do that with the engine off

how's about stripping off that sound/fire insulation stuff on the hood. then the hot air could escape more easily

Ok, thanks for the info guys. I guess I have nothing to be concerned about. I started to wonder about this when I read another post and several people stated that their intake bellows remained cool after running.

So to check the IAT readings, I'll need to purchase a cable and software, won't I? I researched this to see if there is any free scanning software out there for a laptop but couldn't find any for OBD II.

sounds like someone might wanna invest in a Cowl Hood. I have a 3 Inch Cowl on my '93 Z28 and there is always hot hot heat coming out of the hood.

Removing the insulation will only transfer the heat to the hood and possibly damage the paint with the passage of time. It won't help at all with cooling. Jet hot coated headers are the number one way to reduce underhood temps.
