Exclamation Everyone with a MSD 6AL ignition, please come in!!

Ok after inspecting my engine with it off and on, I realize something that I dont think should be there. I heard a mini-ticking...really fast type of quiet ticking coming from my 6AL box(Ofcourse with engine on). Is this supposed to be doing this. If you have one, it would be a HUGE HUGE favor if you could please turn on your car and listen to it. I put my ear right up against it and could hear it easily, just hard to hear over the rest of the motor when not paying attention.

I really really hope this is my problem of running like crap. Thank you for any replys in advanced guys!

Try by bypassing the msd unit and plugging back your stock unit in see if that helps.

Well I just found out that the power wire to it was cut open and was grounding out on the radiator. Fixed that, but its still ticking. Come on, can someone PLEASE help me out here. If I get one person that says its not supposed to tick, then i'll know somethings up. I cant bypass it right now, I gotta wait till a day off(saturday).

Thank you guys.

The power line should be fused as close to the battery terminal as possible to prevent sparks from flying!

Hmm no fuse on the power to the MSD...maybe I should throw one in there?

you should be using a fuse on the power wire with your MSD 6AL. Did you have to put your ear to the box to hear the ticking? Or could you hear it as soon as you lift the hood and turned the car on? The box shouldn't make a loud ticking if that's so. But as suggested do the cheapest thing first and Bypass the MSD box. If it runs fine than it might be hte msd...but what exactly are the problems your having with your car? If your MSD is messing up you'd be able to really tell as you climb the RPM band. Your engine would feel like it wasn't getting full power. I've had similar issues to that...but it was due to a corrossive connector at the battery terminal. But if your box is making a loud ticking I'd send it in to MSD and have it checked out.

MSD boxes tick, it the nature of the beast. I installed my 6AL box in the glove compartment of my old Formula to keep it from hot temps and could always hear it unless the radio was on or the windows were down while driving.

On the TA I put it in the engine compartment. I later (much later) ran into an electrical problem with the car. It was missing and accelerating in 6th (heavy load) wasn’t happening. I though the box had gone bad so I bypassed it only to find that the car wouldn’t even start. Turns out the coil had gone bad and the MSD was the only thing keeping it running (as badly as it was).

Yes one of the problems is that it looses power the faster I go. Like on the highway, it has no juice left anymore. Im also running rich, and pouring out alot of smoke.

Its a pretty quiet tick, I have to put my ear up to it to hear it.

Ill see how it runs now that I fixed that wire that was split open and was grounding out on the radiator. If that doesnt fix it, then I guess ill bypass it.

Is there any way to check the coil without getting a new one? I have an MSD one in there now, not too many miles on it. I have a digital multi-meter if I can check anything with that.

thanks

what size of fuse would you recommend to put in?

I think the instruction book called for a 25 or 30 Amp fuse....where exactly are the MSD wires hooked up to on your car? are they too the battery? If your using the top terminal setup that to can play around with the system. I wired mine up to this thing..."Right here"
I'd be a afraid to run an MSD box up without a Fuse in it...if it grounds out or something it can heat up and cause serious problems...

Yea I have mine going to that power terminal in that pic.

I bypassed the MSD today and was just running off my Coil...but as soon as I turned it on, it was running VERY rough..I tried to drive it but it was scaring me. Then after I hooked back up the MSD I realized I prolly needed to disconnect the battery for 5 min to reset the computer?

Ill give it a try again later i guess. Stupid me.
