Question Engine's Out - Decisions On 383

A couple of days ago I pulled my 355cid LT4 due to the findings of 30% blow-by on my #4 cylinder and 10-20% blow-by on the others.

-----> Here are the pictures.

Thinking that I may have had some cylinder wall scoring...the decision was made to just pull the engine.

After inspection thus far, I've not found any scoring on any of the cylinders....thank God!

Next I'll be inspecting the ring-lands and the heads for burnt valves.

At any rate....I'm now considering stepping up to a 383cid set up. Seeing how I'm already at 355cid I won't need to do any further boring so that will save me some cash but I do understand that I may need some rod clearance.

Is there anyone out there that can help me with a decision on a proven 383 Forged Stroker Kit and Cam combo?

The Z is not my daily driver by any means so I'm not concerned much in the way of streetability. I do drive the Z to certain shows/events during the year and at times I do take her out for a Saturday drive, but I could really care less of the streetability issues. I am setting this up primarily for the dragstrip.

The previous setup of my 355cid LT4 produced good numbers. I managed to pull 11.9 at 117.4 NA and 11.3 at 124.8 'Juice'. I produced these numbers on a race weight of 3,917lbs with driver and on a OEM rear end. I was very bummed that I could not launch with my full potential due to the weak part (rear end) so I will never find out what I could have yielded under full power. On the 11.3...well, that was my last day to race on my 4L60E. The clutches just didn't want to play any longer....so I decided to invest in my Turbo Hydra-matic 400 Transmission and a Yank ProThruster 4,000 rpm-stall. I made a few passes on the new setup and it helped yield me my best NA at 11.9, but I never was able to get a N2O pass due to some misfire issues.

If any of you have recommendations on a proven 383 Forged Stroker Kit and Cam Combo....please post a response with the parts.

Thank you for any help.

Callies Dragon Slayer crank.

What kind of streetability are you looking for? What numbers do you want to run?

Solid roller or hydraulic?

If you're revving to 6500rpm and beyond a Hydra Rev kit might not be a bad idea.

Thanks for the response...

I did note that I could care less about streetability on this.

As for numbers, yea guess I should have added that one in. I'm looking for low 11s NA.

I'm still in the decision realm on whether I'll stay with my N2O or switch to the Vortech Supercharger. So I'm not sure on the compression ratio as of now due to not knowing which way I'll sway on this.

I've heard of too many maintenance issues on the solid cams, but I've really not done much in the way of research....

On the Hydra, I know they basically are designed to keep your engine from floating the valves when overrevved. But as one amigo put it "ya gotta think, is it gonna build any more power to add 16 more springs to the allready tight valvetrain?"

Thinking I'd like to stay below 6,700 rpm's.

I went with an XE 230/236 cam. They have very aggressive ramps and make awesome power in the midrange as well as up top. Has awesome streetability.

You should probably get something more aggressive.

At least a XE 236/242 or an XE 242/248.

The longer stroke of the 383 will swallow alot of the cam anyways.

A 224/230 cam in a 350 sounds WAY lumpier than 230/236 in my 383.

You'll need R-lifters with those cams.

If you're doing a blower you might wanna look at Lunati or Oliver 4340 rods.

I did Eagle H-rods fo a NA setup.

If you do a blower you should do a blower cam instead of the ones I posted above.

Check out www.nu-tekmotorsports.com for their 383 setups.
