engine/trans setup

Ok so i've done some research and looked at alot of setups i've seen on this site and i've came up with this so far; keep in mind this will be a daily driver and not a strip car what-so-ever

Motor has around 160k miles on..

3200 stall converter w/ a trans cooler; i hear edge racing makes a good one (rest of tranny is stock but its bran new rebuild from gm) here's the 2 converters i like http://www.edgeracingconverters.com/...products_id=47 & http://www.edgeracingconverters.com/...products_id=51

comp camshaft (assuming the last cam here would be great for what im looking for but here's the list of cams on comp cam's website for my motor) http://www.compperformancegroupstore..._Code=LTCAMSXE

1.6 comp roller rockers ( dont believe i would need to go with pro mags if im not dragging but i'm open to any information towards pro mags or just the regular mags.. here's the url http://www.compperformancegroupstore..._Code=LTRocker

hydraulic roller lifers ( http://www.compperformancegroupstore...Code=LTLifters )

High-Tech Pushrods 5/16 diameter and 7.200" length

debating on upgrading the pistons and maybe even the injectors as well... haven't done my homework on what else will come along with upgrading these yet (was just a quick idea that popped in my head this morning)

PCMforless Tune (I hear they're outstanding)

not sure about the valve springs and stuff yet... still putting information together about them..

so far im not sure of the rest... im looking towards keeping with comp's items all the way through the motor as i've heard its alot easier to stick with one brand that makes everything to work together.. please inform me if anyone has any better ideas or any good websites to check out for possible lower priced items

also does anyone know if comp r's design ever got changed? i heard they were failing alot and the clips on them were breaking (from the stickied post in this forum ) if not i guess i'll go with stock ones if that will work with my setup so far

The 503 cam is great i have it and its agressive but fun on the street also . The rockers should be fine and as far as springs you will need to upgrade for sure if you follow what comp recommends with the 503 you will in great shape . unless your engine is a high mileage i wouldnt worry about the lifters stock will be fine . Harden push rods and valve guides and i recommend arp studs if you stay with 3/8 or 7/16

The stall will be sweet with the cam , what type of tune are you going with ?

i believe i'll be going with pcmforless tune... they appear to be very professional and just from reading about them and checking out their website i've heard nothing negative about em and from my understanding they've been around longer.

one of my huge issues is should i mess with the pistons and/or bore it out?? at 160k miles should i go ahead and basically rebuild the rest of the motor while its apart? i know if i can afford to do all these upgrades im going to put all new gaskets in it as well just because i have a few leaks (rear main, intake, and possibly the front main and timing chain cover) i cant remember exactly as im not home to take a refreshed look at the motor.

Re: engine/trans setup

Just personal preference here but I wouldn't use Comp lifters. Order a set of LS7 replacements and save yourself $100.

Re: engine/trans setup

The standard GM replacement are LS7 lifters...any GM dealer can get 'em.

Here's the part number for the set: 12499225

I used lifters originally developed for the Cadillac CTS-VR. Lighter with a ceramic check ball. Here's a part number: 88958689

There's probably nothing wrong with Comp Cams lifters anymore. They had serious problems with thier high performance parts with a part number ending in 850-16.

Re: engine/trans setup

ok here's the final list that i've come up with.. unless i missed something somewhere and something wont go with the rest im pretty sure this is the finale of my build

Comp Cam 503 PN: 07-503-8

High Energy
Timing Chain PN: 3207

LS7 Lifters PN: 12499225

Magnum 1.6
Roller Rockers PN: 1418-16

Hi-Tech
Pushrods PN: 7940-16

Beehive Valve PN: 26918-16
Springs
Top 1.075
O.D. .650
Bottom 1.310
O.D. .885

7* Steel Ret.
1.055 Spring
Diameter PN: 787-16

Mach. Steel
Race Locks
1 Groove 7* ang.
11/32 Stem size PN:648-16

Valve Seals
O-Ring, Stock
Guide 11/32 PN:501-16

will be using a pcmforless tune and a 2800-3000 stall converter, not sure if i should go with a trans cooler or not if i wont be running the strips.. maybe just a shift kit would do???

Yes i know some of it is not really needed, but i figure if im going to take apart the motor i might as well replace alot of the small things that would probably start going bad sometime soon anyways. Everything on the list is going off of the cam i picked' list of suggested parts as well so it should all flow together just fine unless i made a mistake somewhere.. any input would be nice before i start preparing for the order within the next few weeks.

also from my understanding i wont need any machine work done on my cylinder heads with this setup either

Agreed. They offer NO performance advantage over the OEM LS7s.

I run the LS7s in my 7000RPM 550HP motor and they work perfectly. They're also a great price.

And a transmission cooler is the SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING in order to help prolong the life of your transmission - at the strip or not. Every 20-degree drop in temperature doubles the life of the fluid. For only $60, why wouldn't you want to install one?
