engine pullout w/o hoist

Looking for opinions, maybe I'm smoking crack.

I've pulled the LT1 out of the top w/ the tranny attached (via a hoist). Not a 'huge' pain, but my garage is small. So I had to back the car out as I was taking the tranny and engine out.

I was thinking, say you take everything possible of the engine (heads. etc), and just leave the shortblock. (leaving only the block and bottom end) Unblot it from the mount, and the tranny. And have 3 guys 'pull' the shortblock out. I'm figuring... ~180 lbs for the block ~50 lbs for the crank and ~10 lbs for the rods/pistons.

Now, I know that the $30 I'd spend for renting a hoist is worth it. I just wanna know if you guys think it's doable. (and if anyone's done it)

Thanks,
J

I don't think I would attempt that.

I've seen it done. Not a good idea. I hurt my back once when I was 17 because I lifted a complete 400 chevy shortblock off of an engine stand by myself and forgot the second rule of lifting...DONT TWIST. Threw my back out and broke my breastbone loose. You'll need to twist to get it out that way. Dont try it. Personal experience.

I've seen people try to pull the block out with a chain through the front of a mint '85 IROC which was very dumb. I was like when I drove to my friends house and saw that. (then they tried parting it and couldn't sell anything...dumbasses) They did this after trying that method and getting frustrated. Getting to the point...it isn't worth trying unless you're gonna do it the right way.
