Engine Overheating

I have a 93 Z28 that I can not get to cool properly. What happens is that when I stop for any period of time my engine will start to over heat. But as soon as the engine reaches a temp of about 220 the fan will kick on and cool the engine back down to 180(which is the setting of the thermostat). So I replaced the thermostat and that didn't do the trick so I finely broke down and brought the car to the dealer for a diagnostic and they told me that camaro's just run hot. I found this explanation to be a little hard to believe. So I was wondering if maybe some sensor or switch could be bad that is allowing the engine to heat so high before the radiator fans kick on. Any insight on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

It is true most stock Camaros run hot. One way to improve on this is to get a 160 thermostat and get a chip burned so you fans on earlier.

Yes indeedy they run hot. Normally not bad like you say but when I'm in traffic the temp goes way up too (220 or so). Not to worry though I ddid some research and found that due to the newer metalurgy (cant spell) these higher temps are not something to be concerned about because theyre simply built that way.

Where would you be able to get a chip burned to turn the fans on sooner and about how much would it cost? Thanks for the info.

mine runs anywhere from 190 to 220, and go as high as 230 on long idles... (til the fans cool it down)

u'd need a HPP3 to program ur fans to come on earlier, or get a friend with LT1_edit to change it for you....

or you can just install a man fan switch which would be the cheapest... but u gotta do some wiring for that...
