engine light

just the other day i started my car up and the little engine light went on. is it time for a tune up or did a sensor go? one of my buddies told me to buy a code reader to check the problem or should i take it in to the dealership?

you need the computer scanned, dealer is probably 80 for that, autozone is free, or you could buy a scan tool, but you didnt mention if your obd1 or obd2 so its hard to make a recomendation.

You might want to include the year of your car when you post a tech question like this, because not all LT1's are the same... Big difference between scanning an OBD-II (AutoZone will do it) with 100's of trouble codes, and scanning an OBD-I (not all AutoZones will/can do it) with the much simpler diagnostics. Even within the OBD-I models, there are differences between the 93, 94 and 95's that can alter the answer.

I guess the simple answer is "don't guess, get it scanned". But unless you have a 93, you can't use the cheapie "code scanners", or use the paperclip to short out the ALDL pins.
