I had an opti go bad on me last year. Replaced it with a brand new one from GM. The new one lasted a week before it started dying. Replaced it again under warranty...next one was a DOA.
I've swapped over 10 optis over the years on friend's cars. They can last 60,000 miles or be DOA.
If the car is running rich, I would check ignition and fuel psi.
If there is no black smoke or scanner doesn't show high mV, then go with Injuneer's recommendation.
