Engine dies at random and difficult to start once warm

Opti, cap and rotor, plugs, and wires are all brand new with maybe 700 miles on them. Pump primes when key is turned on. No codes

Yesterday for no apparent reason after driving to a few places the car just wouldn't start up again. Tried a few more times and it just turned over no problems. Happened again later that day, after trying a few more times I let it cool for about 25 minutes and it started right up. Then after driving for about 5 minutes it just died. No sputtering, no stalling, just cut out. All accessories work. Went underneath checked all the wires I could find none of them were burnt. Checked all connections they all seem fine. Coil terminal had a lot of corrosion but I cleaned that off.

Today it started up right away when cool. Drove five miles to the store came back out and wouldn't start again. After a few tries it started right up, let it run for about 10 minutes while I ate and all of a sudden it just died. Didn't have anything to test the spark, however I took off the coil wire stuck a screw driver in there and put the other end of the screw driver to the terminal, no sparking occurred. Had to wait 40 minutes before it decided to run again.

Besides the starting problem, the car runs perfectly fine, no stalling, sputtering, or backfires. Scanner showed that everything is pretty much operating the way it should.

Edit: Coil and ICM have been replaced. Still continuing to have issue.

I know you just replaced it, but that sounds like an opti to me.

I've had the car about 2 1/2 years and I have no idea if the previous owner ever replaced the coil. I replaced the opti a few weeks ago, as of yet I haven't driven it in the rain, and nothing has leaked on it. Looking at it it appears just as clean as the day I bought it. Last time my opti went was due to coolant leaking onto the top, and oil seeping through I believe to be the opti seal and o-rings. All have been replaced, and the coolant leak has been fixed.

Most optis fail due to moisture in them and I don't see how anything got in.

Check your ICM (ignition control module). When it gets hot, it demonstrates the same symptoms as you describe. Mine went out and used to die when the engine got warm, then would only crank and not start. I just happened to have an extra lying around, but its like $90 from Autozone. Good luck.

Just replaced the coil, and while I was at it, spaced the ICM from the head. Started right up. Let it warm up to operating temp and shut it off. Waited about 10-15 minutes which would be the time that went between starts yesterday and tried again. Wouldn't start, would spin but doesn't turn over. Going to pick up a new ICM now.

So now the coil and ICM have been replaced. And I'm still having the issue. Fuel pump primes when key is turned out. When the car died out last night, the fuel pump continued on for about 2 seconds before turning off, so it seems the the pump is operating. Like I said, new plugs, wires, opti, cap and rotor, coil, and ICM are new.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Edit: Still no codes either.

Edit: Haven't had a fuel pressure gauge yet, however when pressing on schrader valve fuel shot out pretty good.

Ok so I got the fuel pressure gauge hooked up right now. Primed to 41, idles at 38, and WOT was about 47. When primed it holds pressure so I think I can rule out the fuel system with this problem.

So I'm stumped, only does this when it is warmed up. Fuel system looks good. Pretty much entire ignition system is brand new.

Please any suggestions would be great, I really need this car back.

Thank you in advance

Nah doesn't do any of that. When the motor is cool it starts right up no issues at all. Idles fine, revs fine, drives fine. When it gets warmed up, the symptoms don't happen right away. But suddenly the motor will cut out unexpectedly without warning. No back fire, nothing. Just suddenly the rpms just drop to 0. Doesn't matter if its driving or just idling. Then afterwards it will not start until it has cooled down. It will crank and crank but will get nothing.

It will run fine cold but run like the videos above when warm. Im thinking ground problem or opti.

When its warm it runs fine as well until suddenly it just cuts out. There is no set time limit or temp at which it does it just randomly when warm. I've scanned the computer every time it cuts out and not getting any codes. I would imagine at least I'd get DTC 16. Checked every connection I could find and everything was in, nothing broken or burnt. I'm just completely stumped.

Any idea if it's the optical portion or the cap and rotor? I'm just curious what my options are if I can't get it replaced under warranty.

I would almost bet it's the ICM. In the second video, when the vehicle died. There were no dash light on, whenever my past ICM's went out. I didn't have a single dash light on.

check that damned opti HARNESS, i had just replaced my opti and the rest of my igntion system so i wouldnt have that issue anymore, and boom! a month later it cuts off while hot, wont start...cools off, starts right up. the video also shows symptoms of what mine did, tach wildly fluctuating, and it threw that damn 'check engine light', that damn thing is about $150 direct from GM, take some time and check on ebay, there's a guy who makes those harnesses with genuine GM pigtails, and sells them for about $50, i bought one, snapped right in, havnt had any trouble since. apparently this is a common damn harness to go bad. goodluck with the problem
