EMERGENCY! -A4 Transmission JUST quit

My Tranny just stopped working correctly about an hour ago on the way to my GF's house. My plan is to get it to the mechanic first thing tomorrow morning but I am hoping to diagnose what the problem "could" be ahead of time so im somewhat prepared...

I noticed it not shifting properly into 2-3 (I think) for about 2 minutes slowly getting worse and worse until it just would NOT shift into 3 (It just rev's above 3000 rpm). Its hard to tell if it is 2-3 because it happens at such low rpm, could be the 1-2 shift =/. I know the max speed i can go is approximatly 45-50 Km/hour (28mph-31mph). It now won't engage anything above that!!

I hope someone can help me in whats wrong with the car, I'm kind of in a bind transportation wise the next day or so because its my daily driver!!

Prices + parts and possible diagnosis is what i'm hoping for..This board has always come through for me in the past, you guys are great...

I just took the car out again and it is into 2-3 that it doesnt grab. I checked the fluid and it seems ok (was red but did smell a tad burnt). The fluid level was ok to.
If I shift into 2nd it's completly normal (i took it up to 4500 no problems).
Is this a complete tranny rebuild? Or a solenoid that just needs replacing.. ? help... !!

Sounds like you burnt up the 2-3 clutch pack...hence the burnt smell. After doing the same to mine, I can say, you'll never forget that smell!

Find youself a trusty mechanic who is competant in rebuilding auto's. Also, I'd expect to pay no less than $800. That's just an estimate from my own experience.

Yeah Buddy. I had similar problem with my LT1 a4 1994. My car took a dump on me too driving home one night. As soon as the heat gets the clutches in the tranny. it slips. SORRY BUD time for a rebuild. The Person Up top is right. FOr sure try to find a very good TECH to work on your tranny. I recommend RAYbesto CLutchs too. For a good rebuild your lookin about 1500$range. Or lower Give or take. Good luck

no such clutches
sounds like the 3-4 pack went out its a very weak link in the trans if not done right, a good rebuild will cost $1300+

I had a similar problem about two weeks ago. Mine would take a long time to shift into 3rd and would not shift into 4th. Mine was bad 3rd and 4th gears. 3rd-4th gears run together so thats probably what is wrong. Hope i was a little bit of help I dont know that much about transmissions.

First of thanks for the replys.
I talked to my mechanic, specializes in transmissions.. thank god!
He's going to do a stock rebuild for 1200 CDN that works out to around 800 USD, I'm quite happy about the price, i'm paying him cash which is why hes able to do it for that much. My car is nearly stock and probably will be near stock for quite a while, but i DO like to get on it from time to time. I know there are a LOT of things you can do to it when you rebuild it, but i Dont need a bullet proof tranny, just one that works and will last for a good while.
What would you say is the most important and critical improvements over a stock build that I do to it? I'm going to make a trip out to him soon today to get him some cash and make any last adjustments on the parts i need...

Anyways dude, im telling you, talk to dave smith. www.lt1dave.com, if you want some background on him www.gcfba.com. We have prolly 30 people running his trannies. For a tad more than what you are going to pay for a stock rebuild, he will build a huge tranny for ya. just trying to save you some money down the road.

FIrst off. I Dont beleive in BUllet Proof Trannies. Either the tranny is built RIGHT. or its not Built right.; Either the tranny is built right but cant handle the horse power that your putting to the ground. OR The Tranny is built to handle the Horsepower that your putting out. IT all depends on the REbuild and modifications you have. My Buddy has a 97 LT1 TA with a so called BUllet Proof. 4l60E tranny. He paid 2200 bucks for the tranny. He pushing over 550hp to the ground. That Tranny lasted him for 5 Runs on the track. After the 5th run. His Clutches. Did not hold up and his tranny was slippin. IN fact We ripped out the tranny broke it down. ALl the clutches were burned up. So as Far as BUllet Proof is concerned. NO way. IT ALL depends on the BIULDER and what he puts in it. AND what you DO with the CAR. I Hihgly REcommned putting in a TRANNY COOLER with your REBUILD to keep your tranny cool under hot conditions> ANd Raybesto Clutches Those handle Power Very well. GOOD LUCK

It costs only minimally more to add a little extra strength to the tranny as long as it is going to be rebuilt. The big expense is the labor and expertise. I would spend the extra $150.00-$200.00 on some better parts (kit). The labor will stay the same and you will have something that will be much better than stock for very little additional cash.
