electrical gremlin??
electrical gremlin??
Hey guys,
I think I have an electrical prob with my z. It all started the other day when I tried to start my car. I turned the key and nothing happened. Like a dead battery, none of the gauges or dash lights came on ie. air bag, ses, abs, the normal system check. However the headlights and interior lights worked without dimming. After trying a couple of times to start the car, it finally works. 20 minutes later, it stalls on the highway at 65mph. Again, everything seems to work except the dash lights and gauges. So I kick the panel underneath the steering wheel (cause I'm angry) and I'm magically able to start the car again. I open up the panel and get to the wires the next morning to see what's going on. The previous owner installed an alarm which never seemed to work for the past 2 years. So i unsplice, what I'm guessing was the power wire, from the red 10 gauge. I taped up the wires and tried to start the car. Everything worked ie. all the gauges and ligts. I tried a couple more times and met good results. Here is the weird part. I take her out for a test run and for 3 minutes everything was fine. Then all of the dash lights came on, along with the ignition beeping and hazards for a split second. The car ran rough for 2 seconds and then smoothed out. I has been a day and nothing has happened since. But I am a little concerned, I don't want to get stranded somewhere. Does anyone know what the flashing of all the gauges and lights meant? Do I still have a short even though nothing has happened in 5 hours of pretty steady driving? Can I trust this car on trips? All of the fuses are ok and everything seems to work fine. I'm sorry for the long post, I thought it best to try and explain in some detail. Thanks for all the help fellas.

Re: electrical gremlin??
If it is not due to some aftermarket wiring mess, I would say your ignition switch is going out or the harness plugs are not making a good connection. There is a replacement guide for the ignition switch on my Tech Page.
