!EGR vs. Intake Manifold Leak

If I were to buy an EGR block off kit would that eliminate the chance of the rear of the intake manifold leak on my car? I was reading an article on how the heat from the EGR tube melts the intake gasket. My guess is that if you disable the EGR system than that will stop the excessive heat going through that tube back ther, right?

Re: !EGR vs. Intake Manifold Leak

a quote from the master (shoebox)

"It has been said the EGR pipe's proximity to the back of the intake manifold seal contributes to the infamous intake manifold leak. Excess heat there certainly does not help matters, but the pipe can be re-bent in some cases to increase the distance. Some heat wrap could also be used."

Thats not a bad idea, but my question is that will the block off kit eliminate the heat in that tube.

yep

the last primary off the back of the passenger side manifold is where the tube is coming from, with the block off kit you can throw away your tube, since it blocks the exhaust flow at the manifold.

Wow, how much of a PITA is that block off plate to install? Also, is there any downsides to this mod?

Re: !EGR vs. Intake Manifold Leak

The egr connection isn't too bad on the back of the intake manifold, but the one on the manifold is a different story, you MIGHT be able to reach it with the car on ramps from under the car, but your best bet would be to just lay across the top of the engine and try to see if you can get a open ended wrench on it. Someone else might be able to help you with getting to the one on the manifold, since the only time I've messed with it the y-pipe was off.

I do have access to a lift at work, so I guess it cant be that bad. Do I have to worry about any check engine lights after this mod?

the obd1 cars usually don't have a problem setting off an engine code when you get the egr removed, but it would probably be a good idea to get the whole system programmed out by someone like ion at madz28 eventually.

The only way you will solve the heat issue is to keep any heat from ever getting into the EGR exhaust gas feed pipe. Plugging the intake manifold end of it and moving it as far away from the intake as possible is another possibility. Merely putting on block-off plates on the back of the intake won't stop the heat in the pipe.

Dont the block off plates cover the exhaust manifold too? Ive seen a few on ebay and they come with 3 plates. Im guessing 2 for the intake manifold, and one for the exhaust manifold, right? If that were the case than the hose wouldnt even be on the vehicle.

Sure, if you remove the pipe and block it off at the exhaust manifold, that would do it. Notice I said "Merely putting on block-off plates on the back of the intake ...".
